Each session is unique and tailored according to the client's needs using a variety of techniques and modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Practices, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Art Therapy.
I strongly believe in the protective and positive intention of all challenging emotions and patterns of thought. My goal is to help my clients explore the sources of these patterns, listen to their unmet needs, and then work with these feelings in order to get the need met in a healthy way. I also encourage clients to increase their tolerance of these uncomfortable emotions, which then allows for growth. I validate, support, and accept clients right where they are, while also challenging them to take the lead in their progress and personal growth.

To lose faith in yourself, the future, the healing force of the human spirit is a terrible tragedy. In my work with adolescents and adults, our task is to re-ignite that vital life force. Through reexamining the past we remove old blocks, make sense of today's issues and work through self-destructive patterns. My training in Humanistic Psychotherapy and Jungian studies,EMDR, Family Systems Theory and Focusing enable me to draw from a wide range of interventions and interpretations. I also have worked extensively in the realm of addictions and eating disorders using a 12 step model.

I specialize in working with adults, ages 18 and up, who struggle with body image distress, body dysmorphia, disordered eating, and eating disorders who are looking to heal their relationship with themselves and food. Individuals who suffer from disordered eating and negative body image tend to struggle with self worth, high levels of shame, self-criticism, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, and a history of trauma. All of which perpetuate the illness. Eating disorders are not disorders of lacking control, but disorders of unmet needs.

I understand that the world is a scary place. Sometimes, it feels like there’s more change than stability, and as a teen or twenty-something…well, that change can seem like an on-going, constant in our every day lives. On top of it all, you’re also constantly hearing the many voices around you that claim to know what’s best, yet they’re somehow all saying different things. In the midst of this chaos, it might even feel like you sometimes have to make a choice: You can be your full, authentic, vibrant self, or you can keep your head down, try to fit in, and do your best to please all of those voices telling you who to be.

If you struggle and remain unhappy I'm glad you'd consider letting someone help. Suffering is a serious matter. People suffer from many different and individual reasons such as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, addictions, or histories of abuse, neglect or trauma. Many people suffer with issues related to sexuality (being gay, lesbian, sexually-addicted, HIV+, etc.) Shame is a damaging experience for anyone (gay or straight) and needs to be addressed head on for change. There is hope. Together, we can figure out the best road ahead. Happiness matters. That is true for everyone, including you.

lI have been in private practice for 46 years in Littleton, Colorado. My work is a combination of the Western understanding of personality development including the powerful family influences as we grow up. Also important is the Nature we are born with. My view includes the Eastern understanding that we are imbued with pure aspects of Essence that emerge developmentally and are often buried due to our early experiences of life. The problem solving that we do in the session naturally leads to our deeper issues that when mirrored and supported become permanent changes in relationship to ourselves and others.

We are all striving to be our best selves, even when we're stuck in life. My approach is grounded in this belief, as well as the conviction that a collaborative and trusting relationship is the foundation for any successful therapy. Understanding together the reasons and context for your particular behaviors or feelings can help move you towards change, and holding the painful emotions we all carry around with us can be powerfully healing over time. The therapy space is here for us to work towards helping you discover your authentic self and heal.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
