The concept of "I will be worthy when..." is a common narrative that many individuals hold. Trauma has a way of distorting our perception of self-worth, making us believe that accomplishing specific goals or fulfilling certain expectations will validate our worth. However, this perception often leads to a trade-off, where we compromise our authenticity for a validation that may not bring the fulfillment we seek. Recovering from trauma involves a gradual process where we address essential interpersonal skills that are not given qualities but need to be learned and nurtured.

Dr. Jessica Reyka, Psy.D., the founder and owner of Grass Roots Healing, LLC, is a firm believer that in order to reconnect and heal, we must first go back to the "root" of the problem or concern, which often stems far back into one's life, and then work towards healing from an inward-out approach. "The stronger our roots are, the more beautiful the leaves that come from the tree"; similar to the process of therapy where we rebuild the foundation from which you view the world and create a life/beliefs/behaviors that are more in alignment with your true values and authentic self.

Being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world can be exhausting, confusing, and overwhelming. Engaging in conversations and connecting with others, advocating for your needs, and forming simple relationships can be challenging. This may lead to anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. These struggles can impact your performance in school or work, affecting task initiation, focus, mood, and your ability to show up as your true self. Working with a supportive therapist who helps you identify your strengths and creates space to address your needs can be empowering and liberating.

Women like you suffer from burnout, low self-esteem, damaging self-talk, & self-sabotaging behavior in response to living in a patriarchal society.
Is all of your time & energy spent caring for others, with none left over for your own self-care? Do you find your mind filled with negative self-talk? Are you constantly comparing yourself to others & finding yourself coming up short? Have you become burned out by working a job that pays a salary far lower than your skill set is worth? Are you pressured to count every calorie, try every new diet, & over-exercise to punish yourself for enjoying a meal? Are you stuck in a relationship that isn’t meeting your needs, or that you’re afraid to leave? Do you simultaneously feel guilty for working & like you're not working enough?

I specialize in empowering women to embody their ideal identity, grow their self-compassion, and take steps towards their goals.
Imagine if you had the confidence to show up as your authentic self. Or if your teenage daughter could overcome insecurity to be the person she genuinely wants to be. Maybe you are fed up with questioning who you are and wondering how to embody the multiple identities and roles you align with. You have been taught to stifle your confidence, take up less space, and conform to the values and behaviors of everyone around you. You’re ready to unpack and overcome these challenges. You want to set attainable goals for yourself. Most of all you are ready to reconnect with who you are.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
