I help adults and teens from all backgrounds reconnect with their true self after experiencing childhood trauma. Childhood trauma can have a profound impact on how we perceive ourselves and the world around us, often laying the foundation for anxiety and low self-esteem later in life. Many of the clients I work with experience anxiety which manifests as perfectionism, social anxiety, overthinking, difficulty relaxing, negative self-talk, and a constant feeling of being on edge. My therapeutic approach is gentle and compassionate, combining relational and narrative therapy, humanistic principles, and inner child work.

Trauma, abuse, & grief can greatly impact how we function on a day to day basis. Everyone's experiences are unique & individual. There may be times where you cannot explain why this or that happened and that can feel both confusing and frustrating. Has something like this ever happened to you before? Through counseling, we can explore different modalities & evidenced based research to locate the roots of this confusion and frustration.

My name is McKay Johnsen and I am a therapist who works with others to define and pursue meaning and paths forward throughout the therapeutic relationship. The human-to-human relationship is the most important aspect of any therapeutic relationship. Everyone has the rock bottoms and the dreaded low points at times, some more frequent than others, and it is in these moments that we seek out our most precious memories and experiences and draw upon the love we have felt from others to garner hope for a future with more light to come. I strive to be one of these lights in the minds and eyes of my clients for when they have these moments

I have worked in multiple clinical settings with various populations. I appreciate working with clients who are navigating existential crises, those who are looking for a better understanding to the meaning of life. This experience can help clients identify and break negative or unhealthy patterns in their lives. I am a firm believer in the power of perception-shifting, in order to identify a silver lining in even the most difficult situations. My therapeutic approach is dynamic and eclectic. My goal with all of my clients is to walk beside them through their struggles and help them come through their struggles feeling stronger.

Hi there! It is normal to feel overwhelmed once you’ve decided to enlist the help of a therapist. I specialize in helping individuals who face anxiety, depression, the challenge of transition, and pain from the past. Once we look at what's going on and how the past shapes the present, we have more agency in how the future unfolds. If you feel sad, worried, and insecure, let's talk.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
