The past decade of working with children has allowed me to fully understand how every child is unique, and their needs and behaviors can vary greatly. For example, a child with Autism might have specific sensory sensitivities or communication preferences, while a child with ADHD might bring high energy and impulsivity into the room. In play therapy, my approach is to take time to truly understand the child through our interactions to discover their needs and find the right tools and strategies for managing their emotions and behaviors, while building coping skills and gaining confidence in themselves.

Holding onto "ME" while being part of "US" is behind many of our emotional problems.
It's time to think about yourself differently. I'm not exactly the touchy feely kind of therapist and won't ask "how does that make you feel" every 5 minutes. I help you get significant, lasting change, not just to feel good talking. I work with individual, couples and families. It's your thoughts and beliefs that cause your problems. If you want change in marriage, trauma, anxiety, depression, anger or even drug/alcohol use, we have to change the way you think about yourself, both individually and within your relationships. When we fix that, everything else falls in line.

I specialize in the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, attachment struggles, addiction, tensions arising within couples and families, and ADHD and school perfor mance issues.
The hu man experience can be overwhelming and can leave us feeling alone, invisible, and “stuck.” Therapy can be a fantastic tool in helping those who are ready to make changes move forward towards their authentic selves- the people they want, and enjoy to be. Therapy is not a one-size fits all activity, and I believe that the role of a clinician is to match client needs with eclectic interventions. In my practice, I utilize many different evidenced-based therapies, including CBT, ACT, EMDR, EFT, COSP, Theraplay, mindfulness training, mediation, and more.

My approach draws from CBT, mindfulness, and hu manistic psychology––all ways to become aware of, and then adjust, the negative stories that constantly play in our minds.
I work with deep-thinking, creative people, who are striving to be in their worlds in congruent and fulfilling ways. I love working with people who are approaching life transitions: graduations, the birth of a child, the completion of a long running project, or a career change. College students, new dads, and passionate nerds are all good fits for my style.

And, I really want to acknowledge your courage in seeking support. If you choose to work with me, I offer a compassionate space for you to work through painful memories or relationship issues, to sort through existential dilemmas, to transition through stages of life, and to make meaning out of the tough things you have been through along the way. My aim is to help you heal, AND to cheer you on as you identify your unrealized potential, re-discover your true self, and reclaim your joy.

Life is unpredictable and challenging. Whether due to a life changing event that occurs in the blink of an eye, or circumstances existing for years or even decades, inevitably we all experience periods in our lives where we feel overwhelmed, isolated, inadequate, depressed, anxious, or even broken. Often these feelings are the byproduct of stress or even trauma. If not properly managed, the effects of stress and trauma will eventually have a detrimental effect on our careers, and, more importantly, our personal relationships and families. In some cases, our personal relationships may actually be the source of the stress or trauma.

My area of emphasis is grief and loss - although I work with all populations to include: parenting, childhood and adolescent issues, school perfor mance, couples and family issues, as well as, life coaching.

What thoughts, memories or experiences are gripping you like a weight and pulling you down or keeping you from doing the things that matter most in this life? Whether you are a child or an adult, each of these questions has meaning. As living, breathing and feeling hu man beings we go through this "Life" journey encountering and experiencing many glimpses of happiness, as well as, tastes of struggle. These experiences in our "Life" journey are shared from childhood to old age.

How many ways have you tried to help your husband understand what your relationship needs? Explaining, hinting, pleading, complaining, even yelling haven’t worked for more than a week or two. Often, he becomes defensive and argumentative, silently ignores you, or blames you saying you don't make sense. Maybe, it’s his depression, anxiety, trauma, or childhood? You think you still love him, and, after all this time, you don’t want to leave, spend all your relationship energy on the kids, or have an affair. You're tired of feeling stressed, worrying, tossing and turning at night. It shouldn’t be this hard, right?

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
