I have trained in the Gottman Method and Developmental Model of Couples Therapy, Brainspotting for trauma and DBT for handling hard emotions.
Therapy is about more than talking, it's about gaining the skills for making changes you need in order to get you to your goals. I am empathetic but straight forward, finding a balance between a client's thoughts, emotions and behaviors. You might be ready to have your behavior change before internal change can occur. You need to be action action oriented and I will be also. I always push clients for change but do so in a way that is enjoyable for all involved. By the end of each session you will have a sense of progress made toward your ultimate goals.

(Currently OOO on maternity leave, will return Jan 2024) I am happy to hold a safe space for you and serve as a guide to help you find the change you're looking for. It is very important to me that I don't use a one size fits all approach and that we work together to tailor my skills to meet your needs, because I may be the professional but you are the expert in your life. Together, we will discover what you are needing in order to achieve peace and balance. As a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), I will bring a systemic perspective to the therapeutic process.

My passion is helping individuals and couples develop the tools to thrive. So often, we feel pressure to shrink ourselves to fit into external expectations. Therapy is a place to break free from those expectations and explore all aspects of yourself. We focus on how your past and present experiences impact your emotional wellness. By drawing connections between your emotions, thoughts, and experiences, one can learn how they impact your life and move towards healing and a meaningful life. Specific to couples therapy, I enjoy helping couples discover the underlying emotions driving discomfort and disconnection, leading to change.

Navigating coupling, uncoupling, transitions, and relationships can be challenging. We yearn for togetherness and separateness; closeness and space; intimacy and independence; trust/safety/security and spark/intrigue/desire. In relationships we ask: Can I be myself here? We fear in relationships we are either losing love or losing ourselves. Lorna is passionate about supporting couples and connection. She works with partners and individuals experiencing relational distress and exploring attachment orientations - leveraging forces that foster a sense of safety alongside those that sustain long-term fulfillment and desire.

Sometimes life can leave the best of us feeling helpless, unlovable, and lonely. While Western culture promotes emotional independence as a strength, attachment science is discovering the opposite: humans are wired to experience vulnerability in connection with one another. From this evidence-based approach, my first priority is to build a genuine connection with you that fosters openness, trust, and compassion - to provide a safe haven where you can begin to develop curiosity and awareness around patterns that no longer serve you while helping you uncover a more authentic story of you and your place in the world.

Is life currently a struggle? Do you feel anxious, sad or lonely? Do things that use to bring you joy no longer provide you happiness? Is your mental health negatively affecting your relationships, job or family life? Today we face more stressors in our lives than we ever have before. COVID 19, changes in the economy, daily uncertainty has made our lives more challenging than ever. If you feel like old coping skills are no longer working and that support from friends and family isn't enough then it's time to get outside support. Finding someone who will support you during hard times in a non-judgmental, safe space can be helpful.

Relationships with romantic partners, friends, and family can feel so exhausting. No matter how hard you try, you may still end up feeling alone, misunderstood, unheard, or unappreciated by those around you. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way - your relationships can be spaces where you feel safe, supported, and fulfilled.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
