I am a clinical psychologist specializing depression, anxiety, relationship problems, work related issues, life changes, personal growth, trauma, family issues, identity development.
People seek therapy because they need to make changes in their lives. Whether feeling overwhelmed by current circumstances or unable to break away from old patterns and struggles, therapy offers clarity, hope, and the possibility of change. My experience and education have led me to believe that one of the most important aspects of psychotherapy is the client-therapist relationship: therapy is a relationship based treatment. My client-centered approach is built on a positive, mutually respectful relationship. My approach is individually tailored for each client, taking into account their past and their current situation.

I specialize in helping adults who have not been helped by past treatment, who have problems feeling connected, or who have long-standing struggles with trauma, depression, anxiety, or relationships. Currently I have openings for Group Therapy (not for individual or couples). I am happy to refer you to trusted colleagues if you would like to chat about that. All our therapists track how effective we are - and we publish our results. That's what makes The Colorado Center for Clinical Excellence different. I invite you to read about my approach, results, fees, articles, and resources at thecoloradocenter.com.

Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, feeling connected with yourself and others, and more? Does it affect your day-to-day life, your relationships, your work, and how you feel overall? Or you may feel exhausted, overwhelmed, frustrated, lost, and disconnected by the day to day life and demands. You may be asking yourself, "Is life supposed to feel this way?" The answer is no. Now more than ever, people are feeling anxious, overwhelmed and uncertain about how they are supposed to manage their relationships, careers and their lives. Pushing away your needs and not taking time for yourself can lead to long-term issues.

Through this approach, I have witnessed many find solace and heal from issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, challenges in relationships, and even psychosis and schizophrenia.
It is my belief that we all have an innate desire to connect, feel heard, and be understood. My therapeutic approach is grounded in this belief, and it is my hope that we will create a meaningful therapy that is validating and encouraging, yet simultaneously challenging enough to be a catalyst for meaningful growth. Because change often occurs as a byproduct of a connected and understanding relationship, a critical task of therapy is to help you explore, understand, and challenge what meanings you have made of your experiences, and in so doing, facilitate a new experience of yourself or your relationships.

Waitlist for new clients
I love to work with people who have experienced trauma or are experiencing issues with depression, attachment/relationships, anxiety, grief/loss and chronic pain.
There are times in life when we feel stuck. Sometimes it's due to patterns of thinking/behavior that aren’t working for us anymore & other times its from events in our past that are affecting our present. But what we now know with neuroscience is that we can actually reshape how our past experiences impact our current lives. In counseling we can help you better understand your story & make sense of what is keeping you stuck. Sometimes healing looks like examining patterns that aren't working and other times its through trauma processing. By honoring your story you can experience new levels of emotion, self-compassion and connection.

Life throws us challenges, big and small. And sometimes we need someone to help us along the way. Are you someone who is struggling with depression, anxiety, perinatal/postpartum, parenting a child with higher needs, fertility issues, or low self-esteem/self-worth? Maybe you're struggling in your marriage/relationship or relationships in general. Or maybe you're going through a life transition that isn't what you expected and/or is challenging. Either way, you deserve brighter days and a quality of life that you are okay with.

Struggling with symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, or however your distress manifests makes us feel trapped, in cycles of outbursts or avoidance, and coping in ways that are not sustainable. We blame ourselves bringing us further from feeling connected and closer to feeling ashamed. Typically what we see on the surface is mistaken for ourself and is our way to cope with the issues that lie underneath. Therapy is creating a compassionate and purposeful environment to dive into deeper issues, seeing how these issues present in daily life, and developing relevant skills to free ourselves from these issues.

Suppose you are struggling with trauma, anxiety, stress, depression, family issues, loss and grief, or relationship issues.
Our foundational beliefs, values, experiences, and attitudes are the foundation upon which everything that comes into our lives is built. Like building a home, if a stone in the foundation is skewed, the house is structurally compromised. When we experience trauma or negative experiences, everything that touches upon that foundation is compromised. This can lead to anxiety, depression, relationship issues, low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, PTSD, and a loss of life direction, just to name a few possible results. We all can restructure our lives through processing and perspective.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
