I use age and developmentally appropriate techniques like play therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) among others.
My mission is to guide children, parents and families towards an increase in strength and resiliency. Teaghlach (pronounced /chye-lukh/) means family in Irish Gaelic. Family is a subjective term, meaning there is no “normal” when it comes to identifying what a family means to you. Strength and resiliency comes from families of all shapes and sizes. Whether you are looking for support for your child dealing with anxiety, behavior or self-esteem, or for yourself, individually or along with your partner, to grow in your relationships and skills, I hope that you find Teaghlach Counseling to be the support your family is looking for.

Some find simply talking is helpful enough, while others prefer structured therapy like CBT, DBT, MI, and EMDR.
Life can be really tough sometimes, right? It could be dealing with a big argument with your spouse, losing someone you love, having a setback in school or work plans, or feeling unsafe in a relationship. When things get rough, we often tell ourselves things like, “I should be stronger,” "My voice doesn't matter," or “I can’t trust anyone.” Despite trying really hard to feel better—like reading self-help books, changing our diet, or keeping a strict exercise routine—we might still feel stuck. We might even turn to things like alcohol or other ways to escape the sadness, even though deep down we know it’s not helping.

With a focus in Internal Family Systems, Anger Management, Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT).
Moving through life is like writing a book. We are all composing our own stories. Sometimes we get stuck, due to choices, events or behaviors. It’s like a bookmark getting put in the pages of our story and when we try to move forward, the pages fall open to that bookmarked, painful memory. With the help of therapy, we can heal from that pain and take the bookmark out of the book of our life. The pages remain, but they serve to make us stronger & wiser as we fill in the empty page before us today. By learning new skills and gaining the ability to adapt, we can move forward with a sense of purpose and peace.

Together, using a trauma-focused, dialectical behavior therapy approach, we reshape these patterns so you can experience more happiness, effective responses, and satisfaction in your life.
Do you struggle to understand why you sometimes respond to situations and events in ways that seem counterproductive? As human beings, for better or worse, we all experience people, environments, and events that shape our sense of self and how we interact with those around us. These experiences can lead to extreme sadness, anxiety, loss of hope, and serious struggles in relationships that interfere with feeling satisfied and living a fulfilled life. I love what I do as a therapist and feel privileged to work with people as they learn and grow toward who they hope to be.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
