I am trained in Exposure and Response Prevention ( ERP), Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitization (EMDR), as well as Art Therapy.
You may be struggling with anxiety and/ or a traumatic experience; it can be debilitating. You may feel alone and worried about whether or not you will ever have relief. Oftentimes, you might feel isolated from those you care for; feel lost and uncertain; unsure if you can have a quality life. You can navigate this with a therapist who is able to build a strong therapeutic relationship anchored in trust and safety. I have been able to help many as they embark upon a journey of health addressing some of their greatest fears in order to improve their standard of life and grapple with the anxiety and trauma holding them back.

I work best with clients who are looking for an informal, supportive setting where they can learn skills that help them manage their lives more effectively, whether the problem is big feelings, a disconnect in relationships with those close to you, ADHD symptoms, trouble with boundaries and assertiveness, or anger and controlling behavior--anything that makes you feel like you've somehow gotten away from the person you'd like to be.

Hi! I'm Tara Hegg, a licensed professional counselor. I have a very collaborative approach to therapy as I have expertise in the field of psychology and you are the expert on yourself. I specialize in treating obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety and related disorders, as well as sport and performance psychology and couples counseling. I began studying psychology because I was fascinated with why people think and behave the way they do. I particularly love neuropsychology and science. I bring some of this to my sessions. I hadn't initially planned on being a therapist but I ended up here and I love it.

You have told yourself over and over that you can handle your anxiety, OCD, stress, and overwhelm because you don't have time to care for yourself between family, work, and other demands. Deep down you know you need help, and working with a therapist can be the most impactful step you take towards a life with less perfectionism, less parental guilt, and increased achievement towards the goals that matter to YOU. Identify where it all started, and what you can do about it. Sleep better, enjoy life more and get messy on this road to recovery. I promise there will be lots of laughter along the way.

The decision to come to therapy can be a complex one, deserving of compassion, empathy and respect. We all hold unique identities and diverse experiences and our journey in the therapeutic process should honor that. My approach to therapy is deeply person-centered, grounded in unconditional positive regard and the belief we are all inherently worthy of connection and compassion. I am guided by strengths-based and trauma-informed perspectives which seek to enhance the healing tools we may already hold inside.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and have been practicing for over 25 years. In my experience, those seeking therapy are looking for answers for how better to navigate their lives to ease emotional pain and find fulfillment within their lives. I believe that life's hurts primarily occur in relation to others and that healing often comes through relationship as well, sometimes by seeking a professional's guidance. You may discover that having someone walk alongside you in your journey for a time, acting as a witness to your stories, is an invaluable gift.

It is my pleasure to work with individuals, couples, and families, to help bring hope and healing. Many individuals struggle with anxiety, depression, past trauma, as well as negative thought cycles, that leave them stuck and miserable. It's common for teens to experience low self esteem, and confusion about the future and where they belong. Couples can find themselves in a place where they struggle to connect, and end up in defense postures feeling frustrated and disconnected. Often, there is healing that needs to take place as well as learning to see through each other's "lenses", to build a strong attachment that will last.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapists

Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?

Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviors that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.

Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioral therapy?

Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioral change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.

How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?

While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.

What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?

The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
