Are you dealing with trauma, anxiety, addiction, stress, grief, or loss? Do you want peace of mind and to enjoy success? I help individuals realign with their integrity and strength to make the changes they want. Using Eastern and Western techniques I help clients 're-story' traumas and anxieties that allow them to achieve their goals. As an ordained Buddhist priest and former Chaplain, I also offer spiritual counseling. My experience training/counseling prisoners in the United States and Indonesia taught me how often we imprison ourselves with our own emotions.

Welcome – and thank you for your interest in the possibility of working together. Choosing to work with a new therapist is a deeply personal and sometimes difficult decision; especially when considering the balance of vulnerability and trust that's typically required to make progress toward your mental health goals. My approach is highly relational, empathetic, compassionate, and collaborative - all of which are essential traits when working with adults and teens (age 18+) who are focused on overcoming anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction; along with a handful of other common co-occurring concerns.

The world can be a harsh place for someone who doesn’t fit the mold of the majority or adhere to the dominant cultural narrative because it doesn’t fit who they are inside. This struggle can leave you feeling depressed, anxious, and hopeless. I create a supportive therapeutic space to help you unpack your emotions, process struggles, and voice the impacts you have felt from living in a society that can be un-accepting, oppressive, and even abusive. I can help you develop safety from within, healthy coping tools, and brainstorm ways of connecting with community so you can live a fully authentic life.

Do you feel stuck? Do you feel like you know all the rules and what you are “supposed to do” but somehow can’t get where you want to go? As your therapist, my goal is to help you feel at home in your body, mind, and heart. I can help deconstruct and shift your “shoulds” into something that feels more authentic and meaningful to you. We also can dig into your past and explore how old coping mechanisms that may have helped at one time are now limiting. I am trained in a myriad of techniques—including mindfulness and EMDR—to gently guide your mind and body back to the present moment to a state of well-being and resiliency.

I am a Contemplative Psychotherapist who studied Buddhist Psychology and we will use mindfulness, humor and compassion as tools for healing.
Congratulations on your pursuit of self study! This step is a brave one. As a therapist, I adhere to the philosophy that you have all of the wisdom you need, my job is to help you uncover it for yourself. I want to walk alongside you in your journey toward self-understanding, self-awareness, and self-compassion; a journey that will hopefully be incorporated throughout a lifetime. Rather than hate away the parts of ourselves we've deemed problematic, we will begin to understand how these parts likely kept us safe in an unsafe world. Together, we will nurture these parts, which will allow them to soften their grip over our reality.

Buddhist Therapists

Is buddhism beneficial for mental health?

While Buddhism itself is not a treatment for mental health conditions, its practices can greatly enhance mental well-being by introducing coping skills and ideas that promote overall wellness. Key Buddhist practices, such as mindfulness, have been shown to alleviate symptoms of various mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, addiction, and trauma. Moreover, Buddhism's focus on self-compassion, non-judgment, and acceptance can benefit individuals with particularly negative or self-critical thought patterns.

What are the concepts and principles of buddhism as a therapeutic approach?

Core Buddhist principles are often used in therapy to help clients gain insight into their thoughts and emotions. Concepts such as suffering (dukkha) and impermanence (anicca) are applied to help clients recognize that common forms of suffering, like repetitive negative thought patterns, can be accepted and viewed as impermanent. The Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path are additional core concepts utilized frequently in Buddhist therapy sessions. The Four Noble Truths highlight the existence of suffering as an inherent part of the human experience—an insight frequently used to move clients toward greater acceptance. The Eightfold Path, which includes right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right concentration, and right mindfulness, offers practical skills to alleviate suffering.

What is the buddhist approach and practice during a therapy session?

Therapists informed by Buddhist principles often integrate mindfulness and meditation practices into therapy sessions to help clients cultivate greater acceptance, compassion, and non-judgment toward themselves and others. Typically, Buddhist therapists guide clients through mindfulness exercises, such as breathing exercises or body scans, and encourage them to practice similar exercises outside of sessions. Additionally, many Buddhist therapists utilize elements of Positive Psychology or Compassion-Focused Therapy, which can help reduce symptoms of self-criticism and shame common among clients with various mental health conditions. In general, Buddhist therapists strive to embody the compassion and non-judgmental approach they promote, often incorporating exercises aimed at developing compassion in session, such as loving-kindness meditation (Metta).

Is mindfulness the same as buddhism in the context of therapy?

While Buddhist therapists frequently integrate mindfulness practices into therapy sessions, the terms mindfulness and Buddhism are not synonymous in the context of therapy. Therapists may use mindfulness techniques, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), without identifying as a Buddhist therapist. In contrast, those practicing within a Buddhist belief framework typically encourage mindfulness therapies, in addition to foundational Buddhist beliefs, such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. These therapists may also guide clients toward a deeper understanding of Buddhist philosophy, unlike those who use Buddhist mindfulness principles without the broader spiritual context.
