I am also pleased to offer Christian-based therapeutic approaches for those who wish to incorporate their faith into their healing journey.
With over two decades of experience supporting adults, teens, couples, and families, I am deeply committed to walking alongside my clients on their journey to healing. My passion lies in providing specialized care for eating disorders, honed through years of working in diverse inpatient and outpatient settings. Additionally, I am enthusiastic about utilizing EMDR as a powerful tool to facilitate profound healing experiences. EMDR is often quite effective in accessing and addressing deep-seated issues and "stuck points," often leading to a sense of relief and empowerment for my clients.

His experience as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, coupled with education and training in Christian/faith-based settings, provides him with a unique perspective and empathetic approach that is well suited to this niche of clients.
Matt became a therapist because of his desire to serve in a helping profession, and interest in the field of psychology. He draws his inspiration from his own family’s struggles with mental health and prefers working with young adults, particularly those who are seeking help with issues related to the LGBTQ+ community or processing spiritual issues/questions. In therapy, he strives to strike a balance between the person-centered/narrative approach and the evidence-based approach of CBT/ACT. Matt believes in empowering his clients and helping them understand themselves as the experts of their own journey.

My specialty areas include: depression, anxiety, grief, couple/marriage counseling, Christian counseling, identity issues, recovery after a separation or divorce, infidelity, new transitions, career/college counseling, family conflict, work environment issues, impostor syndrome, teacher/administration/education work-related stress, and parenting stress.
Hello! At the beginning, my focus will be on getting to know you. Everyone has a story to tell and as you tell yours, I will be looking for your personal character strengths (we all have them). Your character strengths will help you achieve the positive change(s) you are seeking. Once I get a grasp on your strengths, we will combine your natural strengths with new strategies and supports from a variety of research-based resources. It is my goal that each and every counseling session be preventative, proactive, and/or empowering. Often, you will be given homework so the therapy continues even when we are not meeting.

I have worked extensively with individuals and families impacted by severe mental illness, providing understanding, insight, and practical knowledge. I have a passion for integrating psychological knowledge and Biblical truth. Further, I am specifically gifted in leading others to a deeper, more intimate knowledge of God. I received a BS from Columbia International University in Columbia, S.C. where I double majored in Biblical studies and psychology. I also received a MA Clinical Psychology degree from Wheaton College.

We offer both secular and Christian counseling, and one of our owners is a former pastor.
We recognize how difficult it can be to seek help with mental health issues. Our goal is to meet you where you are in a supportive, encouraging way. We never use shame as a motivator. Instead we seek to provide a balance between giving you time and space to heal and challenging and encouraging you to move forward to a healthier place. We have a staff of over 40 therapists each with different specialties; we all possess the same single passion: to walk with our clients on the path of healing.

Christian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same belief system or background to be able to work effectively together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience in tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of culture, religion, and other factors on each individual.

Why is it important to find a therapist sensitive to Christian values?

Each person brings a unique history and background to therapy, making it important to find a licensed therapist who is trained in a broad range of treatment modalities. In addition, for people who grow up in a faith tradition that strongly influences the way they conduct their everyday life, finding a therapist who understands or shares that background can ease the disclosure of sensitive information and facilitate the therapeutic process. For some clients, a Christian therapist is likely to incorporate faith-based principles into emotional healing techniques.

How do I recognize an effective Christian therapist?

Christian therapists are licensed mental health professionals—holding a master’s or doctoral degree in medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy—who are also familiar with Christian beliefs and values. They have an understanding of the importance that Christian principles play in the lives of individuals and families, which allows them to be especially sensitive to the kinds of struggles that can affect daily functioning. Like all effective therapists, a Christian therapist will have undergone training and certification in a variety of treatment modalities that help people through crises and enable them to master the challenges of life.

Why might someone feel comfortable with a Christian therapist?

While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, research has long established that a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic success. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who not only is responsive to questions and concerns but also shares a client’s faith and values. Sensitivity to spiritual matters as well as to everyday struggles can provide a welcome sense of safety and contribute to the bond between client and therapist, both of which support the therapeutic process.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Christian therapists?

The directory of Christian therapists includes professionals who have shared their background in their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Christian clients, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation.
