I find that individuals with psychosis or other forms of severe mental illness have too-often been told that they're "crazy" or "delusional" - even by mental health professionals.
I take a cognitive-behavioral approach to helping clients. Within that framework, I've trained in traditional CBT for a variety of problems, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), mindfulness-based treatments, trauma-focused treatments (Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy), and treatment for chronic depression (CBASP). Using this knowledge, I can create a treatment plan that fits your needs and goals. I specialize in psychosis, OCD, mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder), anxiety disorders, trauma, and insomnia in adults and older adolescents.

I provide compassionate and caring evidence based treatment using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I treat problems including generalized anxiety disorder, depression, panic, PTSD and OCD, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. I work primarily with adults, older adults, adolescents (ages 16+) and their families. Cognitive therapy is active, directive, and structured- each session focuses on a specific set of problems. I am especially interested in helping young adults who are experiencing more complex and serious mental illnesses (such as bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders) and their families.

I work with trauma and extreme states of consciousness, including alternatives for bipolar, schizophrenia, psychosis, medication, diagnosis, and family domestic violence.
My work as a therapist is to help individuals, couples, and families access new resources behind emotional struggles and life problems. I am trained in Jungian and Open Dialogue approaches and am a lifelong learner of the work of R.D. Laing. I am recognized internationally for my advocacy and training work in the psychiatric survivors movement and as a leader for new social responses to what gets called madness and psychosis. I see suffering, including what gets called psychosis, from outside the narrow mechanistic science, diagnostic label, and medication views.

I have developed specialties in helping individuals struggling with transitions and adjustments, depression, anxiety, psychosis, trauma and work stress.
Our upbringing and past experiences can create blind spots, causing emotional distress, making it difficult to navigate challenges personally and interpersonally. If you're seeking to deepen self-awareness, heal from past wounds, and develop new strategies for life's ups and downs, I'm here to support you. Together in therapy, we can explore the roots of anxiety, depression, intergenerational trauma, and relationship issues, helping you uncover your innate strengths and view yourself and the world with greater clarity. Let’s work together to overcome these roadblocks and build a more fulfilling life.

I have experience treating a wide variety of disorders from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder to Schizophrenia, among many others.
Seeking help can be intimidating and scary. Revealing the most vulnerable pieces of yourself to a stranger takes an incredible amount of courage and risk, and is often a barrier to people seeking help. However, simply reading this means you’re brave enough to take that risk and you’re already taking the initial steps toward living a life that you want for yourself. My goal is to help you in a timeframe that works for you. Therapy is a process and I believe it moves at your pace and in the direction you see fit. You’re the leader to your care because you are the expert in yourself. I’m simply here to help cultivate growth.

Although I see people with everyday problems, I specialize in the psychotherapeutic treatment of schizophrenia.
I have over 40 years experience, 20 in the Monterey Peninsula. I believe that the key to most emotional and psychological problems lies in relationships, those in the past and in the present. Learned conscious and unconscious behavior patterns can cause difficulties in life, and these behavior problems can be changed or modified. My approach is eclectic, utilizing Gestalt Therapy, psychodrama, Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Therapy, and other modalities within a psychodynamic framework. I work with adults, adolescents, couples, and families. I see people who are depressed, stressed, anxious, or who are having relationship or sexual problems.

Psychosis Therapists

What’s the most effective treatment for psychosis?

The most effective treatment for psychosis is coordinated specialty care. In this model, a team of professionals works with a patient to address all aspects of the underlying disorder. This approach incorporates individual or group therapy, employment and education support, family support and education, medication management (which often involves low doses of antipsychotics), and case management to facilitate problem-solving as needed.

When should people seek treatment for psychosis?

People should seek immediate treatment at the earliest indication of psychosis. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized or blocked speech, and agitated body movements. Early signs that a person may be developing a disorder that will lead to psychosis include suspiciousness of others, memory problems and distractibility, an inability to think clearly, rapid or nonsensical speech, withdrawal from friends or family, aggression toward others, and sensitivity to bright lights or noises.

What if psychosis is left untreated?

Without treatment, psychosis can have significant repercussions, including injuries, job loss, homelessness, financial or legal trouble, ruptured relationships, and suffering for the person and their family. While early treatment for psychosis often yields the best results, there is no point past which it becomes useless to seek treatment. At any point, treatment can make a difference.

How do I get someone else to seek treatment for psychosis?

It’s extremely difficult to watch a loved one suffer from hallucinations, delusions, and other elements of psychosis—sometimes exacerbated by their fears of treatment. Have a conversation with them in a quiet space and maintain a calm, supportive tone. Share your concerns about behaviors you’ve observed, suggest treatment, and explain the potential benefits. Listen carefully to their responses. The person may not be ready after one conversation, but with time, they may come around.
