Though we draw from the traditional psychoanalytic frameworks, we aim to take an integrative approach to counseling that incorporates elements of philosophy, spirituality, and perspectives from across cultures.
We work with a diverse population of adult individuals, couples, and special interest groups who may be struggling with any number of mental health challenges related to anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship issues, and substance abuse, among others. We are committed to providing culturally competent care across the spectrum of age, race, gender, sexuality, religion, and background.

I have a PsyD in psychoanalysis and specialized training psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
I will provide a safe environment for you to explore and understand yourself while helping you to create an insightful narrative for your life. Therapy can provide you a unique opportunity to explore your personal history in a new relationship, to see it in a new way, while you make connections between past and current conflicts and how they influence the way you relate to yourself and to others. Our work together can help you to resolve painful conflicts, enjoy relationships more fully and to experience life more deeply.

I am a psychoanalyst in private practice in San Francisco. In addition to my clinical work with patients, I also offer consultation for other clinicians and teach and supervise with various psychoanalytic sites in the Bay Area. My writing about the intersection between Buddhism and psychoanalysis has received awards from NCSPP, a local psychoanalytic organization, and APsaA, a national one. I can help guide you in the process of more clearly seeing and navigating your emotional landscape - why you might be prone to anger or worry, why accomplishments feel fleeting, or why things aren't working as you'd like interpersonally.

My education and training has been primarily psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, and my approach reflects the application of this evidence-base.
My work is informed by years of practice and research in evidence-based methods and interventions aimed at helping people change. I create strong collaborative relationships with a goal of helping to improve personal and interpersonal effectiveness, and to bringing about one's best, most authentic self. By working on problematic relationship patterns, changing patterns of thought and behavior, and by learning to become more flexible and integrated, my aim is to increase my patients' overall effectiveness and help them lead happier, more fulfilling lives. I expect changes made in therapy will lead to systemic improvements in my patients' lives.

I therefore combine in-depth exploration, utilizing psychodynamic/psychoanalytic curiosity, with directive skills use like skills elements from DBT.
Wether you struggle to restore perspective, calm and balance in your life, attempt to heal trauma, depression and anxiety, or seek to discover and pursue greater potential and purpose, I offer a safe, open, curious and non-judgemental place to do just that. Everything you think, feel, do and experience actually makes complete sense - we simply may need some time to understand and appreciate why it does. This growing awareness allows for better design of a life with purposeful future and relief from the past, offering real, actual choice rather than the apparent choice in repetitive, automatic and unconscious routines.

My approach to individual therapy is psychodynamic, psychoanalytic and relational.
I work with highly sensitive people to explore their identity and the impact of past experiences on their lives in order to find freedom moving forward with intention. My clients are artists and empaths. Many are healing from trauma, abuse, and addiction. In addition to my work with individuals, I help couples honor their differences, create shared understanding, rekindle intimacy, improve their communication skills, and find clarity about how they want to move forward in their relationship, whether that means separating or renewing their commitment to one another.

Using a psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approach, I work with the mind's elusive parts to help you connect with your most authentic self.
Life can feel overwhelming, confusing, and, at times, impossible. You may know your problems but can’t seem to overcome them. Whether existential issues or life’s minutiae weigh you down, trauma has left you feeling cut off from yourself and others, or your creativity feels stunted by your past, I understand how isolating these challenges can be. You don't have to navigate them alone.

I practice psychoanalytic psychotherapy, an empirically validated treatment focusing on our inner life, seeking to understand how and why we feel and behave the way we do, how to live life with more intention and agency, handle our emotional life with more ease, and improve our ability to be in relationships with others.
I am a Clinical Psychologist who helps people live life with more freedom, meaning, depth, and peace. I work with patients from diverse backgrounds who have varied concerns that bring them to psychotherapy: including young adults, parents, professionals, entrepreneurs, and older people. I've been in practice 15+ years and have extensive clinical experience in addition to teaching, writing, and lecturing in academia. I also supervise post-doc psychologists and other clinicians to help them hone their craft. I'd be happy to see if I can be helpful, and if I cannot, connect you with a trusted colleague.

My typical client is no stranger to phrases like "you’re over-thinking it" and "too smart for your own good." They are gifted thinkers and problem solvers beginning to understand that the problems they face aren't ones they can just think their way out of. I practice a form of psychoanalytic psychotherapy informed by my own warm, Midwestern sensibility. I believe in the power of this approach to foster deep transformation and lasting improvement, even when other forms of treatment have failed. I have experienced this power time and again, both personally and in my work with clients.

I am a licensed psychotherapist specializing in psychoanalytic therapy with adults. I believe that this work is so much more than just talk therapy. In my work, I choose to work with all of the experience that comes with being you, your dreams, your fantasies, and everything else that makes you who you are. I believe in navigating your experience with you and at your own pace without having a predetermined goal or approach. I understand that the journey to healing and self-discovery is one that can be messy and uncomfortable but also beautiful and enriching.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
