Therapy sometimes feels intimidating and it might be hard to know where to start. I take a collaborative approach with clients to understand what led to the appointment, what kind of change they would like to see, and what barriers are preventing it. Therapy is a process of finding clarity and adjusting behaviors so that actions and values are aligned. What might sound simple, is rarely easy, and often there may be practical, societal, systemic, legal or cultural barriers that compound the difficulty. Whether goals are emotional, behavioral, relational or health-related, we will find a path forward.

There are literally hundreds of therapy approaches. And yet, effective treatment always involves the same truth: No matter what kind it is, in order to really get anywhere you have to experience it, not just talk about it.

I am dually licensed as an MFT and a Psychologist. I am also a hypnotherapist. I treat many conditions. Depression, Anxiety and PTSD for example. I believe that the therapeutic connection is essential; I respect my youngers as well as my elders. However, I believe that what differentiates a psychotherapist from a paid friend is a mastery of the unconcious. I therefore include in my practice methods that tap into a person's inner knowledge of self: EMDR, Natural Processing, hypnosis, inner child work and Gestalt dreamwork. I see the unconcious as the last frontier, and we are pioneers!

Over the last two and half decades my clientele has changed along with my experience, skill acquisition and personal life. I have been fortunate to have a career that reflects my own life including peek moments, many blessings, lessons, long trials and struggles. Big losses have rounded the edges of once sharp ideals and brought a humble compassion and gratitude for the souls I've met in my office. While I have a solid grasp of several powerful treatment modalities, my goal first is to be a good human to those who seek me out and to utilize my whole self and experience in moving people through their lives.

Life can be difficult at times. Something I learned over the years, through many experiences, career paths, academics, and relationship struggles. We are all susceptible to the trials and tribulations of life. Whether caused by your actions, the actions of others, or some external forces. You may be experiencing a difficult period, wanting and needing support during this troubled time. I offer that support through an unbiased, open-minded, and non-judgemental partnership. I do mean a partnership. Together, we will work toward your wants, needs, and goals.

The last few years have been difficult. Some have found their way towards stability and happiness, others still struggle and feel lost. Although this is a very challenging time for the world, I feel optimistic that as a society, we have been given the opportunity to re-evaluate the trajectory of our lives and to discover what brings us meaning and joy again. As a Therapist trained in CBT, ACT, Behavioral Intervention, and Existential Therapy, I have successfully partnered with many clients who felt lost, anxious, and unable to cope with the changes life has thrust upon them.

Are you feeling depleted and overwhelmed? Are you finding it difficult to connect with others or no longer feeling like yourself? I assure you, you are not alone. I am here to help. I have over 15 years of experience providing support to children, adolescents, adults and families struggling with anxiety, depression, interpersonal conflict and self-esteem issues. I really enjoy working with parents. One of my passions is working with people on the autism spectrum who want to build socialization skills that allow them to celebrate the beautiful person they are rather than focus solely on how they conform to societal norms.

That said, I have special interest in creativity and the arts, fatherhood and men's issues, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and attachment-related/relational issues.
Searching for a therapist can feel daunting, but finding the right one is worth the effort. My practice is informed by evidence-based psychodynamic principles and I approach my work with curiosity and care. Research indicates that the best predictor of effective therapy is not the particular method, but rather the "fit" between the therapist and patient. I always suggest that folks talk to a few therapists before making a decision about how to proceed. I love the work I do and would be happy to chat with you about how I might be able to help.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
