I use practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, validation, insight, socratic questioning, breathing exercises, exposure therapy, mindfulness, and shame resilience to helping others overcome cognitive and emotional obstacles toward improving the view of the self or creating behavioral change.
I take a dynamic approach, helping others through developing the courage and confidence to build new skills, change unhelpful views of the self, and increasing insight and understanding and acceptance of where you are, while working toward where you want to be. The more open and willing you are to share, the better we can work together to come to a shared plan, view of the problem and work toward more distress tolerance.

In addition to my general therapy practice, I have specialized training in Pregnancy and Postpartum Depression and Anxiety; Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and Grief work.
Therapy gives us an opportunity to look at the problem areas in our lives in a safe and non-judgmental environment so that we can find ways to make the changes we desire. As a licensed psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience working with individuals and couples, I work with clients to help manage the feelings associated with life's struggles; recognize, understand and change self-defeating patterns; heal past pain; discover and foster inner strength; and learn new ways to cope that allow a person to get what they want and feel good about themselves.

I'm Certified in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (A beautiful & effective model of therapy) and have specialized in helping couples for 40 years.
Does the distance between you feel unbearable at times? Perhaps you can't find the will or the courage to draw near your partner. Resentment and distrust may have widened the gap. Though reactive fights stand in the way of the tenderness you need, your heartfelt friendship could be just below the surface. Hoping it will get better, we wait to get help, while patterns reinforce distance and a negative view of each other. We become less willing to reveal ourselves or seek comfort and friendship from our most important person. You both really deserve your measure of happiness.

My therapeutic approach is eclectic in that I pull from a number of different theoretical orientations including mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, psychodynamic therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and emotionally focused therapy.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience specializing in anxiety, depression, maternal mental health, women’s issues, life transitions, and parenting. Through my experience, I’ve learned to base my practice around what science calls the negativity bias. This is the notion that when we struggle, we are neurobiologically wired to make sense of our struggle by creating a negative story around it. The negativity bias often keeps us feeling defeated, broken and not good enough.

In marriage and couple counseling, I help you move from negative, hurtful and lonely dynamics to internal safety and a deeper emotional connection through Attachment-based Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy.
Do you feel out of alignment with your authentic self or disconnected from your partner? I help you develop self-awareness and a new relationship with your thoughts and emotions to increase conscious choices, purpose, and relational connections. If you are struggling with grief, anxiety, depression, or a lack of self-esteem, I utilize Mindfulness-Based Cognitive (CBT) tools to shift limiting beliefs and quiet ‘dis-ease’ present for you to move into ‘ease-ful' states. Clients describe me as warm, nonjudgmental, patient and as having an empathetic presence with an assertive approach. Check out testimonials on my website to read more!

I have experience working with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, social phobias, trauma, along with many other issues. And I work to treat these concerns using a variety of therapeutic methods including CBT, Narrative, and person-focused therapy. I have worked with many populations from young children (as early as 4 years old) to couples and adults (in their 50s). While I enjoy working with all populations, I am especially interested in working with teen athletes and teens who are creatively driven. As someone who participated in both these areas as a young adult I have a unique understanding of the pressures to succeed.

Welcome! I know seeking support takes a lot of courage, and I am so glad you are here. For me, therapy is about getting to know yourself, specifically how our thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and behaviors are all connected and can influence our relationships. My goal as a therapist is to assist you in working through life challenges by creating a safe, non-judgemental environment built on trust, empathy, and understanding. As a first-generation Guatemalan-American, I also understand the importance of being culturally aware, as well as the influence and impact it can set on interpersonal relationships and self-reflection.

Quite often life can be full of challenges and it can be difficult to work through them. Part of my goal as your therapist is to help you see that despite these challenges, they can be worked through and you can have a meaningful and fulfilling life. I personally enjoy being on this journey with my clients and will utilize a variety of approaches and techniques to help you overcome them. I do believe that everybody is different and deserves to have a customized approach which works for them, and that is why I work from an eclectic perspective and will personalize a treatment plan for each client.

I have a "come as you are" approach to therapy. So many people are either new to therapy or maybe haven't had the most positive experience so rapport building is most important to me because the more comfortable you are, the more likely you will benefit from the therapy experience. My clinical experience includes grief/loss, survivors of suicide, depression and anxiety, postpartum depression and anxiety, LGBTQIA+, first responders, burnout, and college-aged students. I worked in a Level I Trauma Center for over 7 years and have supported many first responders with workplace trauma and burnout

Navigating life's ups and downs can be a challenge. Trying to manage the many parts of our lives can become overwhelming and block access to our inner voice, where all of our answers lie. I work collaboratively with you to uncover and understand past experiences and traumas that create unhealthy patterns and keep us from thriving. One of the key components to thriving emotionally and in our relationships is the relationship we build with ourselves.

I specialize in helping those who struggle with anxiety, depression, low-self esteem, relationship difficulties, and other symptoms of complex relational/attachment trauma. If you struggle with making decisions, if you're not sure how to navigate relationships, or if you sometimes just feel "lost," therapy can be beneficial. Early attachment wounding can cause ruptures to one's sense of self and internal safety, but we can collaborate to explore your feelings in the safety of the therapeutic relationship. This can create a corrective relational experience that can positively impact your relationship with yourself and others.

When we are feeling down and in need of support, we all deserve someone to talk to about our experiences. Sometimes it's not easy to communicate with those we are closest to about what we are feeling. I'm here to support individuals and families in processing their emotions and life experiences in a supportive and constructive environment. My goal when working with families is often to bridge the communication gap between adults and children. Some areas I specializes in are disruptive behaviors, depression, anxiety, trauma, attachment and communication challenges. Please reach out for a consultation if ever you need support.

My experience started in 2010 working as an intern in an inpatient facility for an eating disorder residential program for a about two years, from there I moved on to working as a therapist at a residential program treating adolescents with dual diagnosis. In the mean time I completed PsyD program and got my doctorate in clinical psychology.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
