I offer a holistic, whole-person approach to therapy influenced by Yoga and Buddhism. This means I see mental health obstacles as opportunities for personal growth and am mostly present- and future-focused, while still tending to the past. My goal is to create calm, confidence, and happiness derived from within. I have experience with depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic/treatment resistant symptoms, and cultural/diversity concerns, amongst others. I work with adults of all ages and I also have a 2-year specialization with undocumented/immigration concerns.

The most powerful skill a counselor may provide for clients is being present with them when they are working through life's challenging moments.

Have you or a loved one struggled with alcohol or drug dependency? Allow me to help you on your journey to recovery. At Life Steps Consulting, we know that life is full of different transitions, which can be broken down into a series of steps. When you are struggling with substance abuse, movement through the transitional steps halts, causing you to fall into unhealthy life cycles, which impact your career goals, relationships, physical and mental health. I can help you get back on track. I not only have studied the disease of alcohol and drug addiction, but I have been there and I know how you feel.

Over the last two and half decades my clientele has changed along with my experience, skill acquisition and personal life. I have been fortunate to have a career that reflects my own life including peek moments, many blessings, lessons, long trials and struggles. Big losses have rounded the edges of once sharp ideals and brought a humble compassion and gratitude for the souls I've met in my office. While I have a solid grasp of several powerful treatment modalities, my goal first is to be a good human to those who seek me out and to utilize my whole self and experience in moving people through their lives.

The clients I often work with seem to have a history of not finding a therapist who gets them and the way they see the world. They struggle with feeling understood and have lost hope that there is anybody out there who can actually help them better their lives. They know there is more to them, they just don’t know how to bring it out of them. Most people of the people I work with just want to feel understood, they want someone to validate how their lives have unfolded to get where they are now, and from that moment, their lives seem to start unfolding. They just needed someone to help them make sense of it all.

As James Baldwin famously said, "not everything that has been faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed unless faced", I also offer you the following poem: "When we feel safe, anything is possible. We become unstoppable. Because we have a firm ground to launch and a safe ground to land. We can then stand. Voice ourselves, show ourselves. Life becomes a dance."

There are many paths to healing and change. The journey is an active one and there is success in simply taking the first step, acknowledging a change is needed. I have worked in mental health services since 1988 and have worked with many different people and issues. I believe that developing awareness, of emotions, thoughts and behavior, is the starting place and that understanding where we come from, what got us here can be helpful, but changing how we feel today is the best way to have a sense of power. I specialize in somatic, or a body based approach to treatment of trauma. Please call or email me for a therapy session today.

I work with adolescents and young adults. I specialize in working with adolescents and young adults who are having a particularly difficult time with major life transitions. I also work with clients struggling with depression, anxiety, difficulties with relationships and individuals who are struggling with a particularly difficult period or event in their lives. Regardless of what I am helping with, my treatment begins and ends with the therapeutic relationship. My first priority in treatment is creating a safe, warm and caring environment for my client from which all other work is built on.

There are literally hundreds of therapy approaches. And yet, effective treatment is like learning to ride a bicycle: No matter what kind it is, you have to experience it, not just talk about it.

I use an eclectic approach from evidence-based techniques to support you compassionately and authentically. I support individuals to engage with life from a more centered, integrated, and fulfilled place. It can be uncomfortable, confusing, and overwhelming to look at many complex parts of ourselves alone. Unexamined, these parts can show up in our lives in different forms such as addictions, anxiety, depression, lack of self-esteem, codependency, stress, and dissatisfaction.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
