Your relationship with yourself is the most important relationship you will have. Experiencing intense emotions, fearfulness or being easily triggered can get in the way of having meaningful relationships with yourself and others. Fear, reactivity, anxiety, panic, unhealthy communication patterns, worry and sadness, can be a result of negative experiences or trauma which can create challenges to living the life you want. Therapy can help to improve your quality of life by uncovering underlying issues, strengthening relational skills and learning strategies to cope with triggers.

Welcome! If you are feeling overstimulated and overwhelmed by life right now, I see you. If you are feeling confused about who you are amid life transitions or traumatic experiences, you are not alone. When a traumatic event happens, however big or small, we learn to hide parts of ourselves we deem unacceptable or unlovable. When we are faced with a big life change or constant stressors, these parts will pop up and make us feel out of control. It’s hard to trust yourself when there is a war going on in your head, and your body is screaming “danger!” at every turn.

Welcome! I work at Horizon Counseling Center as an Associate Marriage Family Therapist under the supervision of Jalena Rusaw, LMFT –CA109022. In my practice, I employ Brainspotting, a trauma-informed therapeutic approach, to help unearth and explore thoughts, emotions, and sensations that may have been unintentionally suppressed or concealed. I also integrate Internal Family Systems therapy, which emphasizes the presence of various aspects within ourselves. According to this framework, there are no inherently "negative" parts, and the therapeutic objective is to assist these parts in discovering their more balanced functions.

I offer a mind-body oriented approach, including EMDR, Brainspotting, and mindful-somatic awareness to help you rediscover that voice and learn to listen and trust it again.
You are committed to feeling better, you've tried everything, but still you feel lost in the pain. You've always been able to "fix" things in your life, why not this? This time, you feel stuck. Maybe you feel gripped by anxiety or panic. Maybe you feel consumed by grief from trauma or loss of a person, pet, or life dream. Maybe you're finding yourself in new life circumstances (a significant health challenge, life milestone, career or relationship change) and wonder "who am I now"? Life has a way of challenging us. There is a way through.

So whether it is CI, Brainspotting, EMDR, Somatic Therapy, talk therapy, or another trauma modality, I can customize your treatment plan to help you get unstuck.
You feel broken, stuck, and afraid to talk about what happened. Why bring up things you want to forget? You tried talking about it and you were told “you have it better than I did” or weren’t believed. You pushed it down but end up exhausted and empty inside. You're ashamed. Was it your fault? You try to act normal but no one knows the real you. You don’t have energy and don’t know what you enjoy. You don't have friends, you are too burned out. When you aren’t numb you're angry, anxious, and second guessing everything. Why can't you get over it? You keep reliving the mistakes that reinforces the “proof" of your worthlessness.

I use body-based methods such as Brainspotting & EMDR to help clients achieve deeper, longer-lasting change.
Are you noticing experiences from your past showing up in your life or relationships today? Perhaps you’re realizing that the childhood you thought was “typical” was actually anything but, and you’re seeing the patterns showing up in the partners you choose or your tendency to try and keep everyone happy. Maybe you’re walking a road through parenthood that you never expected to be on: infertility, pregnancy loss, birth trauma, or postpartum anxiety or depression. While you might have pushed it away for a while, you now can’t ignore the impacts of these experiences on your body, your partner, your child, and your mental health.

Working together we will confront painful thoughts, feelings and memories and begin the journey of healing, sometimes including mindfulness & self-care practices, Brainspotting, and expressive arts, to rebuild self-esteem and release traumatic energy and experiences.
When difficult emotions or experiences interfere with our ability to enjoy life, it can be hard to figure out what to do. Therapy begins as a conversation and progresses into a relationship, creating a foundation for exploring present and past difficulties. My therapeutic approaches are trauma informed; I use methodologies that address root cause to shift and heal old patterns, behaviors and challenges. Together we will explore areas where you might feel stuck or lost, uncover internal strengths and build coping strategies for navigating life‘s difficulties.

I use integrative talk therapy as well as Brainspotting which offers deep, effective and lasting change.
Infidelity and Betrayal Trauma leaves us feeling hopeless, defeated, and angry. Maybe you’re someone who has always said infidelity is a “dealbreaker” but now find yourself facing this with your partner, hoping it isn’t actually the dealbreaker you’ve always known it to be. You may be experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, or searching for solutions after an affair that has left you feeling hopeless and out of control. But you’re ready to move forward. You’re ready to take one step forward, toward healing. Most of all, you’re ready to be on the other side of this seemingly insurmountable hill, I want to help you get there.

Brainspotting Therapists

How does brainspotting work?

Brainspotting works by using eye positioning to identify and process traumatic memories so that a client is better able to move forward and live with less fear. The theory behind brainspotting is that by identifying where a person looks when thinking of traumatic memories, a therapist will be able to guide them to focus on that spot and work with the client to get them out of the “fight, flight, freeze” response associated with the traumatic memory.

Is brainspotting an evidence-based therapy?

Brainspotting is a theory-based alternative therapy. It is one of the newest forms of treatment, so very little research has been completed that examines the mechanism by which it works. The theory behind brainspotting is that eye position can be linked to areas of the brain that store and process memory.

How effective is brainspotting?

Because it is such a new treatment, the effectiveness of brainspotting cannot be quantified. Some people have found it to be effective on its own, or in conjunction with other types of therapy. It is considered an alternative therapy, and it is popular with people for whom more traditional therapies have proven ineffective.

How long does brainspotting take to work?

A typical brainspotting session will last between 60 to 90 minutes. There is no required number of sessions needed to complete brainspotting therapy, but in many cases it is delivered over the course of about six sessions. Clients are encouraged to rate their level of distress prior to a session and again following a session, and to track progress.
