While I believe that all of us have the strength to overcome our own struggles, I also believe that therapy makes that process easier. With professional help, you can overcome issues with less time, less strain on your relationships, and less impact on your overall well-being. I personally and professionally, believe in the power of this process, and look forward to meeting you where you are to face your struggles together.

I have extensive experience with panic attacks, anxiety, stress, insomnia, and mild to moderate depression.
My approach to therapy includes building awareness of distressing thought, emotional, and behavioral patterns that are part of this autopilot process and replacing them intentionally with more adaptive patterns. This helps create and strengthen new neural pathways in the brain. The majority of our day-to-day behaviors can be best described as being on autopilot which means they occur more so automatically without our conscious effort. This process can be efficient but some parts can also cause us distress.

Hi, I'm Dr. Lori Pasion-Gonzales, and I'm a clinical psychologist in California, where I've been licensed for 30 years. I work almost exclusively via telehealth so that I can be available to people throughout California. Over the years, I found that I work best with people who are experiencing anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, stress and sleep issues, and relationship difficulties. If we work together you can expect compassion, skill, and a sense of humor. My basic approach is from a Cognitive Behavioral perspective, but I have a number of tools to help you on your journey.

As a psychologist and psychoanalyst I believe most of us can benefit from some treatment of psychotherapy/psychoanalysis. Human life can be challenging and our emotions turbulent and elusive. It is costly in every way to embark on a journey to self explore, but most people find the experience rewarding and invaluable.

My approach to therapy is to provide a safe place to allow clients to explore. Using Psychodynamic, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy allows me to meet clients where they are and work together to move past areas where they feel stuck. When clients have a safe space to discuss past events in their lives to understand their link to the present, they have a chance to develop their options and recreate a narrative for what they want their lives to be.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
