Navigating life's challenges can be difficult, whether in relationships with others or with yourself. Past events, unresolved hurts, and current stressors sometimes keep us "stuck" in a cycle of suffering, shame, or guilt. Therapy can help. I work with clients who want to heal and learn to create a life they love and form relationships that nourish them. Many of my clients find there is empowerment in identifying obstacles affecting them, and by doing so it provides them the opportunity to heal wounds and create the life they want. Therapy can help bring clarity, hope, understanding, and meaning to your journey.

No matter your age, life can be unpredictable and take you on difficult emotional journeys. For children and teens, expressing emotions verbally can be even harder due to their developmental level. Situations like divorce, moving, a death in the family, school problems, friend issues, etc., often lead to negative behavioral changes or withdrawal. This is often due to their inability to express themselves properly. My role as a therapist is to create a comfortable and safe place for my clients to process their emotions and explore their inner selves in a way that promotes healing.

Life presents us all with situations that we may not have expected to find ourselves in. Having someone walk with us on our journey and bear witness to our experience is often helpful. If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, behavior/mood changes or family/relationship stressors, you may benefit from therapy. I look forward to working with you as you work on the things that are most important to you.

Are you having conflict with a significant other? Worried about a family member or friend? Caught between caring for your children and caring for your parents? Can't sleep? Underperforming? Having bothersome thoughts? Can't get going? Disorganized? Distracted? Lost interest in things you once enjoyed? These things don't have to manage your life. You can learn how to manage them instead of them managing you.

My goal is to walk alongside you on your journey and provide the support you need on the journey. There is no judgement based on diagnosis or background. I have spent most of my clinician career working with those with severe mental illness diagnosis or requiring residential mental health treatment. For those transitioning from that setting it is hard to find a clinician and one of my goals is to be able to walk alongside those in transition from residential or intensive mental health treatment as they re-integrate back home.

The journey to self-discovery is not linear, nor is it always easy. I believe everyone has the answers they seek within themselves; however, through the cloud of feelings, it can be hard to see the answers before us; sometimes it takes a skilled ear to help us find the way. As your therapist, I strive to create an environment that is compassionate, without judgement, and safe. Together, we will weather the storm, and find the answers you seek.

I work with adults, teenagers, and children and specialize in supporting clients trying to manage the effects of trauma, Depression and Anxiety. I provide a safe, comforting place for clients to share their story, identify strengths, and develop healthy communication and coping skills to more effectively handle challenges. My typical client is looking for a mix of various techniques: active listening, empathy, honesty, practical tools to use on a day-to-day basis, and an improved understanding of the "why is this happening?", and humor to add to the therapeutic relationship.

The human experience is made up of a series of steps and changes. Each change, whether it is perceived in the moment as positive or negative, propels us into uncharted territory, and sometimes, we all need a little help with the navigation. My goal is to assist individuals, children, parents, and couples as they work through new challenges, overcome patterns of negative thoughts and behaviors, and seek personal strength and confidence moving forward.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
