I am able to address issues pertinent to teens and their families, including depression, anxiety (including OCD), anger management, self-harming behaviors, teen dating violence, peer and intimate relationships, parent/child relationships, parent support, family dynamics including divorce and blended family issues and life transitions.
Therapy is about change. Change can be difficult and rewarding, exciting and scary. Wanting a change is a big part of what brings people to therapy. Combining forces with you (you are the expert on you!) I can guide your way towards change and help you achieve your therapeutic goals. I work primarily with teens, their families and young adults. I use an eclectic positive approach, customizing my sessions to my clients’ needs. I’m a believer in humor, artistic expression and creative problem solving.

So much of our happiness boils down to the relationships in our lives; it brings us our greatest joys or our most painful sorrows. Life transitions, both developmental (adolescence, young adults, mid-life) and experiential (cohabitating, marriage, parenting, divorce) can cause unexpected emotional and relational challenges and getting support through these transitions can be hugely beneficial. We all suffer from moments of shame, sadness, loss, confusion, anxiety, insecurity, and fear as we try to move through these developmental stages and life transitions, but you don't have to do it alone.

Hello! I am a published writer and lecturer in the field of psychology and adjunct professor focusing my teaching on LGBTQ+ education. Beyond that, I have a private practice where I am committed to helping you feel happy and content in your life. I believe that we construct our own realities. Sometimes, these self-made realities dictate the trajectory of our lives; however, I know that you can re-write your story of despair into one of hope. I believe in treating the whole person and providing you with unconditional acceptance, kindness, non-judgment, and understanding.

Fundamentally, people need to feel "of use" and this usefulness must be meaningful. I work with my clients to find ways to connect with the world around them and to express their creative productive selves in concert with this foundational premise. The work promotes healthy outlooks on the environment and healthy perspective of oneself. All relationships are addressed, including those with significant others, social environment, work/career/productivity, and oneself. All changes occur through experiencing oneself and the environment in healthy ways.

Waitlist for new clients
My ideal client is a person who is longing to find purpose and meaning in their life and who look beyond mere symptom removal to a sense of who they are, what information the symptom may offer them, and how to live a more fulfilling life, be it as an individual, couple or member of a family. In short, a person who is interested in exploring the depths of their psyche and soul and is not just looking for advice or a quick fix; someone who understands that there is profound meaning in their suffering.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
