My teenage clients report that I have greatly helped in reducing depression and anxiety by providing a non-judgmental space where they can explore communication challenges, self-esteem issues and work on difficulties that create a challenge in their day-to-day life. I work from an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy framework, which can help teens reframe negativity, develop long-term coping skills, and be more fully present in their lives. Clients can recognize that their thoughts and emotions do not have to get in the way of taking action toward meeting their goals and making meaningful connections.

I use somatic techniques, movement, meditation and breathwork to ground you to the present so that we can safely process and release trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, pain and grief that has been stored in the body.
Complex trauma can have a lasting impact on our daily lives. It effects our mood, health, relationships, functioning, thinking, behavior and decision making. Trauma can rob us of joy, connection and convince us that we are undeserving or unworthy of love, care and compassion. In our work together, we will unlock your innate ability to heal, grow and transcend beyond the experiences that have burdened you. You deserve to feel safe, heard, seen and supported. Therapy is an opportunity to come home to yourself, recover and reclaim your life. It would be an honor to walk along side you on that journey.

I enjoy helping clients become their authentic self in a world that tries to control how they identify. I help my clients when it comes to anxiety, life transitions, and trauma using both a trauma-informed and EMDR approach, which allows you to better understand and heal from your past. I guide clients in identifying their strengths and incorporate mindfulness, to feel fully connected with themselves and empowered. I work with clients to process past experiences that make them feel “stuck” in order to move forward by guiding them in unlearning behaviors and habits that don’t feel healthy or connected with who they truly are.

I work with a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, grief and loss, life transitions, relationships, parenting, abandonment, and spirituality.
People often seek out therapy because they feel stuck. In their careers, in their relationships, in their lives. I know what that’s like and how overwhelming it can feel. I became a therapist to help people overcome this struggle and get unstuck. I see therapy as a collaborative partnership; one that’s nurtured in a non-judgmental and safe environment. Believing that our relationship facilitates growth, I utilize psychodynamic and mindfulness perspectives to guide you toward understanding your behavior and a deeper sense of yourself.

My specialties include:  -Couples/Individual therapy with adolescents and adults with presenting concerns including anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and trauma -Psychoeducational assessments for children and adolescents using empirically-validated assessment instruments.
Life is full of various transitions, both expected and unexpected. One can feel pushed to deny or resist these inevitable changes or can begin to take steps to learn, adapt, and adjust to them. I believe everyone has inner strengths that can be awakened in challenging times and therapy can work as a catalyst for change. I have been privileged to journey with individuals who learned to envision their desired lives and to find ways to fulfill them. I have also journeyed with those managing seemingly insurmountable challenges, steadily guiding them toward finding peace in the midst of challenges and eventually overcoming them.

Therapy gives us an opportunity to find and give voice to our authentic selves, achieving healing in the process. And as we heal, our relationships heal. I am passionate about working with couples, adults, and teens who have become stuck in unsatisfying relationships, destructive patterns, or their own individual pain. This "stuck-ness" can leave us feeling alone, misunderstood, anxious, and depressed. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space that is caring, challenging, and encouraging as we work together to develop new insights and create the personal and relational growth you are seeking.

While I work with a variety of individuals and age groups, one specialization is working with older adults (65+) who are experiencing depression, anxiety and cognitive changes.
WHAT WILL THERAPY BE LIKE? I strive to create an environment that is confidential and nonjudgmental. The therapy hour is a time and place where you can feel safe enough to do important work. I also believe that therapy can be enjoyable and life-affirming, even at times a FUN experience. WHAT CAN THERAPY ACCOMPLISH FOR ME? Engaging in psychotherapy provides the opportunity for a new start, an escape from ruminating, from feelings of helplessness and indecision. I will work with you to see and experience your situation in a new way - and take action to make important changes.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
