There is a reason why you are reading this today. You are stuck, or your life is in crisis. In my therapy practice, I don’t see people for emotional tune-ups. It just doesn’t happen that way. There are plenty of self-help books and mindfulness practices for that. What about you, right now? If you are a concerned parent, your child is extremely emotional, or is coming apart at the seams. If you are in a relationship or in a marriage, you are considering ending it. If you are a middle-aged businessman, or perhaps a mother whose young adult just left for college, you are wondering what you should do with the rest of your life.

“Men should…” “Men shouldn't…” I'm sure you've heard these statements many times. In this day and age, it's hard enough to navigate the world as a human. It is a particular type of struggle when you walk the world as a man. The loneliness. Not being understood. Feeling so sad that it has no place to be, but be angry. All of this feels like cold emptiness or a restrained never-ending tension. Either path leads us men to feeling lost without a clue of which way to turn; least of all, knowing who to walk with. I provide a space for you to be open about your struggles without judgment and truly be yourself.

Are you looking for help with your marriage? Are you experiencing painful silence or loneliness when your spouse is in the other room? Sometimes couples bicker and fight in an attempt to get close, and other times they give up and decide to withdraw and live independent lives. In my 30 years as a psychologist, I have helped change the direction of couples that find themselves in situations like the one described above.

Online therapy is available to all of California without leaving your house! Don't miss out getting the help you need. We all want and need connection, but many of us struggle to find connection due to insecurities, negative experiences, anxiety, depression, and so on. Or maybe we've cut ourselves off from relationships altogether, vowing never to be hurt again. Unfortunately, even though we may feel safer, isolation often leaves us feeling terribly alone and dead inside. What can be done?

Therapy is a transformational process. If you are having a difficult time, you are going to need help navigating the struggles in your life. Two of the most common reasons that people come to therapy are they LACK BALANCE in their lives and have NOT BEEN HONEST with themselves. I can certainly empathize with clients who are anxious about or even fear change. Ambivalence regarding change is a common human struggle. However, if you are truly committed to eliminating your current distress, I would love to help in your journey toward a more fulfilling and rewarding life.

Life happens. And along the way, those around us often influence the way we eventually come to feel about ourselves. This can significantly impact the way we live our lives day to day. What if we could untether ourselves from expectations we have internalized from our environments? What if you just do you?

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
