I do best with clients who are impatient for results. The average client sees me for under 12 sessions. My REBT/CBT approach is active-directive and present-oriented. I teach you how to be your own therapist. You're not dependent on me for years or even many months. I regularly suggest homework, enabling you to take an active part in your therapy and make it highly efficient. To understand how I work, go to www.ThreeMinuteTherapy.com. Feel free to call or email with questions: 415-673-2848 or DrEdelstein@ThreeMinuteTherapy.com.

Relationships are wonderful. But, there are also times when a couple can feel stuck. They find themselves replaying the same fights and running into the same roadblocks as they try to find the intimacy, love, and connection they once knew. I help couples to improve their communication, and build more emotional intimacy and physical intimacy. Helping them to find that deep sense of love and connection that brought them together in the first place.

We all, especially teens and young men, have automatic thoughts and beliefs, many that may be negative and harmful, that will strongly influence how we feel and how we act.
Need help with your son? Are you a young man who needs help with ongoing anxiety, depression, or substance abuse issues? I have been working with adolescent boys and young men for over 25 years. Anger, depression, socialization, isolation, substance use/abuse, separation, realtionships, or just plain growing up are some of the issues. As a parent, or a young man yourself, you want to do your best to help you and your family navigate through our complicated and ever changing culture. I connect with my clients through humor, knowledge of a young person’s culture, and a confidential relationship.

Safety is the essence of therapy. My interactive approach focuses on the unique requirements each person needs to feel safe to recover their authentic sense of self which had to be set aside in order to not feel alone. It offers relief from unreasonable beliefs about hurting others. This also allows me to calibrate when treatment is progressing and how to keep it on track. Those who feel stuck in unsatisfying relationships or careers, have difficult family relationships, procrastinate, are indecisive, doubt their talents, think they are an imposter and who protect others at their own expense will find this therapy helpful.

To others, it seems like you have it all. But underneath lives a different story. Despite your outward success, you feel haunted sometimes by feelings of failure, conflict, self-doubt. At certain moments, a gnawing sense overcomes you, telling you: Something is not right. You've made changes but somehow still end up in the same unsatisfying patterns, repeating the same unhelpful behaviors -- feeling more and more alone. You want to understand your patterns and your past so you can create a different future. You want to learn to feel differently about yourself and how you relate with others. You want to find a different way.

My approach to helping people through psychological difficulties is based on the idea that a special form of hu man interaction will increase self-knowledge, develop emotional skills and activate latent potential. I aim to identify unconscious patterns of thinking, feeling and relating that reinforce negative emotion and destructive behavior. My style is directed thoughtful and collaborative. The process of being understood, of learning about the various ways your mind works and of developing a new repertoire of psychological skills will open up new avenues for growth and engagement in your life’s pursuits.

There are literally hundreds of therapy approaches. And yet, effective treatment always involves the same truth: No matter what kind it is, you have to experience it, not just talk about it.

I focus on relationships - and I don't just mean with significant others. What is your relationship with your anxiety or depression? What is your relationship with your trauma, your past? What is your relationship with your thoughts on a daily basis? I believe that I can help to untangle the mess and leave you with a deeper understanding of your self or your situation.

I have found that success, whether relationship, career, parenting, spiritual, or otherwise - can be blunted or excelled based on our perspective and emotional capacity. Often we are using the tools we have or were given and doing the best we can, but it doesn't seem to be enough. I believe we are able to learn tools and skills we were never taught, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and gain a new hope and perspective that allows us to find the success in life we desire. We don’t have to be stagnant with where we are. We can grow and change, — especially when we are supported and taught how to.

We cannot get through life without difficult times. None of us can. Whether it's a family conflict, career predicament, or personal trauma we are going to experience them. And, yet, how we handle them can make all the difference in our future and the future of those we love. I have been doing psychotherapy for a long time, both with individuals and with couples, and hope I have developed an ability to help manage these life situations. I work with people in both short-term crisis situations and longer-term therapy contexts, from their teens to their nineties.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
