While I would describe my overall approach as eclectic, I am primarily interested in an existential/humanistic approach but also bring in aspects of psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, person-centered, cognitive behavioral, as well as reflective practice approaches, among others.
Hello, my name is Rebecca Anderson and I have worked in the mental health field for almost 23 years and have been licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California for over 13 years. In my practice, I see patients dealing with anxiety and depression associated with chronic and severe Medical problems. As a Health Psychologist, I have been in private practice since 1986, following my Doctoral work at USC. In graduate school, my research was involved with psychological reactions to serious medical conditions. Since that time, I have worked with many patients suffering from pain, cardiac conditions, cancer and autoimmune disorders, in addition to helping people cope with grief. Chronic illness is life altering, and can affect every aspect of a person's life. Learning to cope is critical in reclaiming your life.

Whatever brought you to this point it probably started with something you couldn’t control and you are still trying to cope with it. You don't need to deal with all of that alone, seek for help. If you feel stuck in your life, and is hard to move forward, you might benefit from psychotherapy.

You can heal from what hurts you. I seek to be an ally and guide in this process. I work with pts/d and trauma, anxiety, chronic pain, and attachment interruption. My work integrates somatic psychotherapy, neuro-psychology, behavioral change, and holistic practice, and I see relationships through the lens of attachment theory. Together, we unravel responses that aren't serving you, and we build new pathways towards a more fulfilling version of life, however you define that. We use our relationship, your self-knowledge and life-knowledge, and my specialized training to move your life into something personally satisfying.

You are a good person. You are authentic, open, honest, and vulnerable. However, there is someone in your life who takes advantage of your good nature and makes your life a living Hell. While you are open and honest, they respond with secrecy, lies, and often blame you for creating your own stress. I am here to help you sort through all of the chaos and create some peace in your life. Call me and we can discuss how I can help you create appropriate boundaries, and/or start the process of finding another human who will treat you in the same caring way that you treat others. I have evening hours (after 530pm) for people who work days.

I have been in practice 27 years. I am what some people would call a "wounded healer" because I have been sober 36 years and I am also in recovery from codependency and love addiction. I believe you can change your life for the better because I have changed my life for the better. If you love someone who does not love you back, I can help you to stop loving them and help you to start loving yourself. If you cannot say no, I can teach you how to say no in kind way and mean it.

Childhood trauma can cripple us, it creates overpowering ‘intense’ emotions such as anxiety, depression, and anger when left unattended which begins to create physical symptoms to defend our bodies from the internal wounds. Has there ever been a time in your life where you have experienced this reaction? Are you experiencing these feelings based on current or past trauma from childhood, early teens, adolescence, adulthood, or as a senior? I aim to utilize a variety of actionable techniques to help reduce trauma related symptoms and make lasting changes in life.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
