Making the decision to embark on a therapeutic journey takes courage & vulnerability. The power of having someone listen, support, & guide without judgment is a profound experience. The gift of psychotherapy is freedom through self examination & awareness. If we illuminate & bring understanding to the old negative patterns, behaviors & dynamics that have been running our lives we can find new ways of being that create growth & healing. My goal as a therapist is to help clients embrace their authentic selves, foster meaningful relationships, & improve their overall quality of life. Seeking therapy can be rewarding & life changing.

I am a trauma informed therapist who works from an intersectional lens to support my clients, especially those who have traditionally been misunderstood by the mental healthcare system. I work with clients who have experienced trauma, are undergoing major life changes or transitions, and who are exploring their identity and goals. I specialize in working with queer and non-monogamous clients and am affirming of kink and sex work. I also have unique experience working with religious and spiritual abuse, asexuality, those questioning their religious beliefs, neurodiversity, burnout, and self identified "former gifted kids."

As a clinician, it is important to me to know the reasons for someone wanting to attend therapy and if an individual has ever attended therapy before. If this is something you have never done, I would like to understand how you feel about attending? I would also like to discuss (if you have had therapy prior) if those experiences were helpful or not so helpful? Understanding what has helped is important for me as a clinician so that I have an idea of what actually might help you. Making the decision to attend therapy or go back to therapy is not easy, so I want to always make sure my clients feel safe, heard and validated.

In the 20+ years I've been a therapist, I've learned that no two situations are the same. Therefore, I don't profess to have all the answers, but I'm very good at finding answers. I value getting to know people and finding out what has worked and what isn't working and then finding answers together.

“Is it safe?” That is the question almost all partners in a romantic relationship ask, whether it be explicitly communicated or implicitly implied. The desire to know how safe it is to be their authentic self, to share their wildest dreams, deepest fears, or maybe even discover something new together. Similarly, as an individual, you may ask the same about your relationships. What is your story? As your therapist, I provide a warm, inviting, safe environment where we can explore areas of concern and dig into the topics in need of care and attention. I operate as a change consultant which means I am highly collaborative in my work.

“Let me support you to build a greater awareness of your wisdom, and strength” As a licensed psychotherapist I can provide that support, awareness, problem-solving skills, and greater coping strategies for issues as depression, anxiety, parenting, domestic violence, and relationship difficulties. I have clinical experience working with children (play therapy), individuals, families, couples and groups. We all have an 'inner critic'. A pattern of blaming ourselves for events that were out of our control. This negative inner talk is more powerful when we fall into anxiety or depression.

My goal is to assist couples by using the Prepare/Enrich & the Gottman Method to evaluate differences and gain a grasp of each individual's experience.
Couples tend to be drawn to each other's uniqueness and differences when they first meet. Differences can ignite an initial spark and a sense of excitement in a relationship. Challenges and potential disconnections can arise from the same differences that initially sparked attraction over time. Different communication styles, cultural backgrounds, or approaches to handling stress and conflict can lead to tension.

I am highly trained in Robbins-Madanes, The Gottman Method, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Solutions Focused Therapy.
We live in a world with a tremendous amount of people who feel alone, unheard, invalidated, tired, depressed, disconnected and anxious. Our wounds are often the openings into the best and most beautiful parts of us. Many are emerging from very unhealthy relationships with themselves or others and often seek complete rewiring of their relationship patterns. I help create a space where I not only help you feel heard and validated, but also work towards the goal of finding healthy and effective solutions. I look forward to working with you.

You have to feel better to get better. That may seem obvious, but it really isn't. When I begin to work with a new patient, I have two immediate goals: To get to know this person so we can determine if we're a good match; and if we are, to use my years of experience and skills to target current areas of damage and hurt. People come to therapy in pain — something or many things in their lives aren't working. Our job is to take a breath, appreciate your unique situation, understand when and how current problem(s) became unmanageable or toxic, and then find ways to feel better, more hopeful and clear about how to proceed back to life.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
