It takes great courage to start processing our pain and feelings, and denying ourselves of this process can lead to trouble (anxiety attacks, physical illnesses due to stress).
All too often we set our feelings aside, thinking we will deal with them later. That's what I did for years. In my early 20's after a near death experience & a massive panic attack my personal journey of healing & growth started. Since, I have been working on my healing, mindset, undoing-behaviors, re-writing my narrative in order to live a happier, productive and purposeful life. Since 2003, I have been operating my empathic coaching practice, & supporting my clients to their right path. If we don't deal with our feelings & past we end up storing them in our minds & bodies, and this is when anxiety & other health issues arise.

I am so happy that you're here. Reaching out for therapy is a brave act of self-love. At least a part of you knows that you deserve better! Trauma, loss, depression, & anxiety can act as thieves robbing you of living your best life; a life filled with true connection, purpose, and hope. Feelings of helplessness to change or improve your circumstances, anxiously expecting worst-case scenario outcomes, and constantly comparing yourself to others can feel paralyzing.

How would it feel to embody your whole self? What would it be like to welcome the parts of you that haven’t been embraced and discover who you are at your core? Without this knowledge you may feel anxious, depressed, insecure, and like an imposter in your own life. Yet, when you know yourself deeply, you can move through work, engage in relationships, and respond to challenges with confidence, stability, and vitality. I specialize in facilitating this work: to empower you to know your own heart and mind and make decisions that honor who you are. Let’s awaken the truest you.

The majority of my practice focuses on working with Black, Latinx, and people of color struggling with anxiety, ADHD, Depression and Complex PTSD. I see women, men, teenagers and children. We explore identity development, fear, culture, behavioral health and family conflict. My approach is compassionate, warm, honest and structured. Do you experience painful sex, anxiety, struggle with starting or keeping an erection, and ejaculating sooner than you want? Perhaps you have a partner and you are anxious about how to communicate your true feelings or concerns about sex and intimacy. Being authentically you and communicating how you feel can be a real struggle. If this resonates with you, then know that you are not alone. Also, know that your fears are valid; it can feel painful to be rejected, not heard, not seen, and not fulfilled. These struggles are not a reflection of you as a person. They are a sign that there is an area that needs attention and support

My practice provides a unique blend of therapy and coaching. I specialize in helping individuals realize their full potential. This usually means giving people the boost they need to get from where they are to where they want to be. I help people manage transitions, anxiety, depression, adult attention deficit disorder, work place concerns, relationship issues, and look at factors that promote balance both professional and personal needs. My effectiveness in coaching developed as the result of first-hand executive-level experience where I have coached both executives and managers.

Welcome! My name is Athena and I am an Associate Registered Marriage and Family Therapist based in Los Angeles, California. I have experience working with adults and teens addressing physical trauma, emotional abuse, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. I previously worked for a Trauma Assault Crisis Center which has expanded my expertise to include a population that has experienced complex traumas. To me, a therapist is a form of support walking alongside clients in their mental health journey; continuing to learn with them, staying proactive, and backing them as they navigate obstacles. A safe and warm, compassionate space.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
