Gestalt Therapists in Studio City, CA
I'm a former President of the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Los Angeles, a Certified Gestalt Therapist, and Faculty Chair of Pacific Gestalt Institute, a postgraduate psychotherapy training program.
Many of us haven't had much experience with the kind of truly supportive relationships that make healing possible. A good therapeutic relationship - one that allows us to be fully ourselves while recognizing our unique potential - creates the optimal conditions for healing. I provide a place where you can feel safe to explore your most difficult feelings, to work through grief and loss, heal childhood wounds, relieve depression and anxiety, improve communication, increase self-esteem and develop more satisfying relationships. I work with individuals, couples, and groups, and I'm available for both in-person and virtual sessions.

I believe that one of the main payoffs of effective therapy is that a person feels understood, and truly connected with and supported, sometimes for the first time in his or her life. While there is a commonality among all human beings, I treat each patient with sensitivity toward that person’s own individual personality and feelings. You’re the expert on you - I help you to understand more clearly who you are, what are the causes of feelings that may be interfering with your sense of well-being, and help you cope with life in a more skillful manner, and feel better.

Life's journey can be intense and difficult at times. Painful experiences can throw us into a downward spiral of sufferance. Being able to process our struggles allow us to turn them into catalysts for a meaningful life. I offer a space of sincere empathy and emotional safety to explore, learn and grow from discomfort and unease. Through my clinical training I have learned different modalities that allow me to connect with the deepest available information from my clients, and from there I use my knowledge and experience to empower them to find their own truth.

Therapy works, and people can change. Living in a world that is highly relational, we often find that our toughest psychological problems are rooted in systemic relationship issues. I work with individuals and couples who are interested in developing healthier connections with themselves and with others. In order to make healthy relationships with others possible, one must foster a healthy relationship with oneself. In developing psychological health in ourselves, we become better able to interact with others in a way that does not cause us deep pain and ongoing frustration.

Your life contains a series of meaningful stories, each chapter shaped by your choices, circumstances, and relationships. Yet, at times, you may find yourself doubting your decisions, feeling lost, and no longer the protagonist of your own story. In my practice, I use narrative and trauma-informed approaches to explore those moments with you. Together, we will uncover the meaning you’ve created by gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and the cultural and social contexts that shape your experiences, empowering you to rewrite narratives that no longer support your growth and well-being.

Understanding your mind is key to making lasting changes in your life. Therapy provides a unique space to explore how past experiences influence your present thoughts and behaviors. Between our perspectives we'll come to an understanding of what’s going on, and create a path forward that feels authentic. Life often pressures us to be something we’re not, creating stress and inner conflict. These struggles can result in behaviors and coping mechanisms that, while once helpful, now cause distress. Real change begins when you start embracing who you really are, instead of struggling to be who you’re told you should be.

Do you experience painful sex, anxiety, struggle with starting or keeping an erection, and ejaculating sooner than you want? Perhaps you have a partner and you are anxious about how to communicate your true feelings or concerns about sex and intimacy. Being authentically you and communicating how you feel can be a real struggle. If this resonates with you, then know that you are not alone. Also, know that your fears are valid; it can feel painful to be rejected, not heard, not seen, and not fulfilled. These struggles are not a reflection of you as a person. They are a sign that there is an area that needs attention and support

I believe we are all equipped with the resources to navigate our way to fulfillment. Sometimes life's challenges overwhelm us and we need some extra support. Sometimes hurts from long ago arise and get in our way. I will guide you in uncovering your inner strengths by providing a safe environment where we will engage in meaningful conversations about your emotional life. By exploring areas of both dissatisfaction and contentment, and unraveling problematic ideas, we can alleviate your pain and work towards gratification. My dog sometimes likes to come to the office with me.

What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.
How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.
How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.
Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
