With over 15 years of licensed experience providing therapy in the state of California, I have treated a diversity of clients with a wide array of struggles and strengths. We will work together to create a solid plan that meets your needs using therapeutic techniques that the research has shown will help make improvements in the shortest amount of time. To put it simply, the people I meet with for individual or couples therapy often get better in a short amount of time. The path to "better" looks different for each person/couple and I enjoy figuring that puzzle out.

I work with adults (individuals, families, couples, and relationship constellations) on ways to release the grip on coping skills that are no longer serving them, and explore sustainable and affirming perspectives about themselves and the people they care about. I believe that many of the ways we interact with the world are connected to the attachments we have to each other, and attachments/ruptures we experienced in our childhoods. Together, we can explore how these experiences manifest in your life today; and challenge self-limiting beliefs.

In my practice, I work well with clients from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, experiences, needs, and goals for therapy. Generally, my clients are high achieving, accomplished people who are seeking to develop their skills for managing stress, increasing motivation, reducing anxiety, building confidence, healing from trauma, and relating to people in personal and professional settings more effectively. My clients typically want therapy that is empowering, practical, and solutions-focused; as they are hoping to enact changes in their daily lives that will help them identify and reach their goals.

It is crucial to find a therapist that is a good fit, therefore, I like to take the first few sessions to get to know each other and decide if we want to work together. My expertise is working with people who have PTSD, Complex Trauma, and/or Borderline Personality Disorder. I use acceptance and exposure based principles to help you get in touch with your emotions, in the service of living a life that is aligned with your values. I will help you face your fears by taking action steps towards what is most important to you, reducing the hold that trauma has on your life.

In my San Francisco based private practice I focus on an array of issues including depression, anxiety, postpartum depression, parenting support, trauma, support for dads, relationship issues, substance abuse, transgender and gender non-binary support, and counseling for issues related to fertility including birth loss. Too often I work with individuals who have waited until the point of crisis to reach out for help, and relief can start much earlier. With empathy, sensitivity, and humor, my goal is to create a space in which to build the therapeutic relationship while cultivating a happier and healthier sense of self and wellbeing.

You have been living through a stressful and exhausting time. A global pandemic is constantly changing your relationships and the way you live your life. You have also been exposed to an unprecedented amount of collective trauma both within your communities, and on a larger global scale. You're finding it harder to get a good night's rest, and you struggle to find meaning in a world that seems overwhelmingly painful to exist in. You want things to be different, but you don't know how.

I'm here to help you flourish as the fullest, most authentic version of yourself. Together we can explore your stuck and hurt places, hold them with compassion, and build capacity to handle feelings and life situations that currently feel baffling and overwhelming. Many of us have been taught to analyze and intellectualize our way through life's challenges, yet often our greatest wisdom is available not just from our minds but from our bodies and emotions. I can help you to connect and integrate these aspects of yourself to offer you deeper awareness of yourself, your relationships, and of new possibilities available to you.

I have been working with people that are negotiating changes in their lives for over 30 years. I believe that when people are at a crossroads in life, or suffering from depression, anxiety, trauma, or a loss, it can feel very overwhelming. I believe it takes courage to reach out and seek support, and my goal is to create a safe space to help people open up and find ways to approach issues that are causing distress.

So many people wonder what happened to their life. They struggle with navigating relationships, question their gender identity, or are pressured at school or work, unsure of how to make it through the day. Moments like these can be overwhelming, but with guidance and support, many can not only survive but flourish.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
