Life presents us with many opportunities, moments of fulfillment, lack of fulfillment, trauma and/or terrible loss leading to difficulties in emotional intimacy, isolation, panic, resentment, depression - even despair. Our histories and fears mold our choices and can prevent us from achieving a more meaningful fulfilling life. Therapy involves, in part, a journey into the life of buried feelings/beliefs about self and others. Coaching involves emotionally intelligent problem solving. My clients typically consist of professional adults and couples who feel stuck in their lives/relationships. Some are in acute distress, others are unsure of the source/nature of their more chronic difficulties.

With over 15 years of licensed experience providing therapy in the state of California, I have treated a diversity of clients with a wide array of struggles and strengths. We will work together to create a solid plan that meets your needs using therapeutic techniques that the research has shown will help make improvements in the shortest amount of time. To put it simply, the people I meet with for individual or couples therapy often get better in a short amount of time. The path to "better" looks different for each person/couple and I enjoy figuring that puzzle out.

Everyone needs help sometimes. In therapy, we join together to achieve your goals. Many of my clients are working on issues with anxiety and depression brought on by life transitions and past traumas. Together we examine patterns of thinking and behaviors that are no longer serving you. New coping skills help clients tolerate their feelings and improve their interpersonal communication.

I use evidence-based therapy to treat a range of concerns including race-based stress, post-traumatic stress (PTSD), anxiety, insomnia, depression, loneliness, and interpersonal difficulties. In meeting each of my clients, I apply the dialectical balance between acceptance and change, holding firm that “at each moment we are all doing the best we can, and we can also do better”. As a radical behaviorist, I work primarily from Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, in order to enable my clients to find ways to live more fully.

I work primarily with people suffering from depression, anxiety and relationship/ interpersonal issues, integrating psychodynamic, relational and cognitive behavioral approaches.
It's hard to accept you're at a point in your life where you're feeling stuck and you need help. And it takes courage to ask for it. My goal is to create a safe, non-judgemental space in which to help you explore the issues that brought you into therapy. To discover together the underlying patterns of thinking and acting which perpetuate your suffering. And to work towards increased awareness and achievement of your most deeply-felt personal goals.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
