What is commonly referred to as "mental health" is not an absolute. During my 40 years of practice, I've come to think of psychotherapy/counseling as a combination of external focus (how we manage or cope in the world) and internal focus (what needs to be healed se we feel better about who we are). I would like to help you with either/both. My practice includes work with individuals as well as couples.

My practice and teaching focus on culturally competent counseling and combines an emotion-focused, psychodynamic orientation, with somatic and compassion/mindfulness therapies.
Feeling fully alive is important, yet many of us have learned to numb out because of pain, trauma or shame that we experienced growing up in our families, schools and communities. Or, we had to learn to be "cool" in order to survive in this society. Unfortunately, this armoring can cause us to lose our authenticity and aliveness. I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and a Certified Radix® Body-Centered Personal Growth Practitioner with many years of experience working with individuals and groups to help people heal, love themselves and others more, and live their lives more fully.

With over 20 years of experience, I work from a psychodynamic orientation, providing supportive therapy while utilizing cognitive and behavioral approaches, as well as mindfulness techniques when appropriate.
'It's never too late to have a happy childhood.' As a nurturing therapist, I believe my role is to provide support, guidance, and a SAFE place to share, vent, scream, cry, laugh or just sit quietly. I also believe it's not what happens to people that's most important, but what they do about it. Our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become. Though daunting, this realization can be extremely EMPOWERING--You are in charge of your life and your future happiness! With this knowledge, change can unfold.

Hello, I'm a licensed clinical psychologist working with adults in individual and couple's therapy. If you struggle with adjusting to a new phase of life, a new career or living in Southern California, you are not alone. Sometimes people can feel anxious or empty inside even though on the outside, their lives are looking fine. You've tried to hide those sad and lonely feelings from your friends and family, but feeling disconnected from those that you want to be close with is painful. You've noticed doing all kinds of things to not feel out of control.

I view the person as a whole and wellness as a personal journey. It's nearly impossible to heal the mind without also healing the body. As both a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with nearly 15 years of experience, and a Nutritionist, I can help you achieve optimum mental and physical vitality and find your pathway to becoming your best self. Together, we will look at emotions, thoughts, behaviors and unconscious beliefs that may be holding you back, but also consider complementary and alternative means to help you achieve wellness -- focusing on sleep, nutrition, exercise, meditation, social supports, and holistic treatments.

Braving the unsteady waters of healing is an act of self-love. I believe in the transformative power of turning our attention inward to shed light on all parts of self—the beautiful, the “ugly,” the shameful, the resilient. From my experience as both a therapist and a fellow human on this path, I have witnessed the profound power of allowing yourself to be seen, truly seen, in the presence of another. It is my commitment to work together to create an environment where you feel safe, honored, and sacred. This is where our “heart-work” begins.

Fear and anxiety bring about feelings of vulnerability and inadequacy, along with the urge to retreat. It is easy to lose sight of the voice that reminds us of our strength and resilience. We experience deep levels of self-doubt as we are caught in a cycle of anxiety or depression. Healing and liberation can be achieved by exploring and utilizing our self-awareness, core values, and cultural identities. It requires intention and vulnerability to access that awareness and sense of self.

I enjoy working with clients who are motivated to explore their current challenges in an effort to see what is, and is not, working for them. I am passionate about helping clients to identify their growth goals and being a partner for attaining lasting change. Whether the changes need to occur within their mindset, behaviors or personal/relationship boundaries- I am here to help. Clients often have an area of focus in mind when they start therapy, and we often find that this one area affects many others in their lives. Once this focus is addressed, clients often find that the positive changes they are making have widespread effects.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
