Deciding to come into treatment is never an easy decision even when it feels necessary. I work from a psychoanalytic-psychotherapy approach meaning I'm most interested in what your experience is. What that means is that through careful listening and dialogue, I'll work with you to better identify and understand what may be behind painful symptoms like lack of impulse control, binge eating, depression that's so heavy you can't get out of bed, or the terrible grief that comes from losing a loved one.

I have certificate training in Relational psychoanalytic psychotherapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Somatic Experiencing (SE), and integrate these with many other approaches such as: aspects of Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT), Mindfulness, Affective and Interpersonal Neurobiology, Attachment theory, Somatic Psychotherapy, and Family Systems.
I believe deeply in the transformative potential and enduring nature of psychotherapy. When we're feeling stuck, confused or alone, therapy can help us to untangle our emotions, clarify our struggles, and better understand ourselves and others - ultimately forming inroads to real and lasting change. I am a compassionate and collaborative therapist: I establish a safe, non-judgmental space where our mutual exploration of your relationships, family history, career, sexuality, or whatever is troubling you currently - as well as aspects of our therapeutic relationship - will open pathways to new awareness and opportunities for welcome change, growth and healing.

Psychoanalytic therapy is: being curious, listening for deeper meanings, noticing how the past shows up in the present, finding patterns, making links, thinking about emotions, exploring your dreams; Its an archeological exploration to discover your deeper, truer self.
Feeling on the outside? isolated? lonely? longing for connections? looking for a relationship? maybe a place to talk about your unrealized passion in life? Let's create a work space, a therapy laboratory! Go on an inner journey; a journey to discover; an emotional archeological excavation! Lets listen to the deeper part of you, the unconscious, explore your dreams. Lets find the child part. Challenge yourself! Then take your show on the road! Try out your changes on the world. Your creative potential is waiting to be realized!

My background and training are in psychoanalytic and family systems treatment modalities, but I have also incorporated behavior modification and some cognitive behavioral techniques in my work.
I've been in private practice for several years and in the field for over 20 years, working with adults, adolescents and children who have had relational issues, depression, anxiety and a number of other mental health issues. I believe most of us go through periods in our lives when things get to be too much and our functioning is affected. I help my clients to determine what the root issues are and to address them as effectively as possible by working with their strengths in order to increase insight and make behavioral changes that will alleviate the problems.

I am on the faculty of the Newport Psychoanalytic Institute, and served on their Board of Directors 2012-2016.
When we find ourselves feeling burdened or "blocked", or when a certain satisfaction in life seems out of reach, it is often difficult to understand why things aren't clearer to us, or why we can't simply make the changes we want. The truth is, for all of us there is much that goes on in our psyches which eludes our awareness, but which nonetheless informs how we think, how we feel, and even how we act. So the question becomes, how can we open a window into those pockets of our inner world which somehow keep us stymied.

Not accepting new clients
Book with me now by clicking on my website. Most of my clients are young professionals or college and high school students who want to do in-depth, transformative therapy. I enjoy helping people who wish to heal from past trauma or loss, depression, anxiety, or substance abuse. I believe therapy serves as a way of liberating ourselves from problems and wounds of the past so that we can go out into the world to relate and live in newer, more meaningful, ways.

You're a highly sensitive, creative, and empathic person who is ready to heal. You dream of an integrated life where your emotions, intuition, and spirit coexist. A life where healthy relationships flourish and the trauma of your past is finally laid to rest. You may feel exhausted by the pain of your childhood, old relationships, and even current circumstances. In turn, this has created a hunger for a safe space where you can show up as your full self. Welcome. You're home.

Carl Rogers once said, "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change" meaning once someone can sense that a relationship is safe, the opportunities for self-exploration and change appear. I believe that once a person is truly seen, it is then that they can blossom into their truest self. My approach with each session is a warm, curious, and open attitude in the hopes that, ultimately, you arrive at a place of self-understanding and peace. I am direct but kind, and offer you alternative ways of viewing difficult situations in your life.

Life is difficult. A dramatic life event, a body ravaged by addiction or illness, a symptom that defies an easy cure, a trauma that never quite allows life to move forward, or an emptiness that cannot be filled in the outer world may have forced you to go inward, searching for what is lost. It takes courage to reach out for help. I have been counseling people for over 30 years, and during our work together you will have the opportunity to touch into places where old wounds and new potential reside.

The initial search for a therapist can be a daunting task because there's no universal formula. Furthermore, websites can begin to sound the same. My advice is to look for someone, first and foremost, who you can feel comfortable with. This can be gauged through an initial consultation. All of the research tells us that the quality of “the fit” between therapist and patient is the strongest predictive factor in the effectiveness of therapy.

We want to help you slow down and connect... to help you feel more accepting of yourself and satisfied in your important relationships. We are here to illuminate unconscious patterns that may be getting in the way of the lasting change that you desire and deserve. We are here to help you find the connection between your current struggles to wounds that were created long ago in childhood. Psychotherapy is a pathway to understanding, insight and change. In my work, I focus on helping my patients to develop a greater ability to reflect on oneself, that is, "connect the dots", and a greater ability to feel and to act in the world. I believe that an understanding of a persons's relationships with others, both historically and currently, is central to the process of change. I strive to develop this understanding collaboratively in an atmosphere of openness, safety, honesty and curiosity.

I'm a trauma-informed therapist specializing in mood disorders, somatic challenges, and relational distress. Also, I work with those who identify as neurodivergent, with specialized training in ASD and High Sensitivity. Overwhelm is our current cultural standard of functioning. It's hard to slow down, but emotional, and perhaps, physical pain suggest something needs to shift. Work with me to process trauma, and treat the anxiety, depression, and relationships that have you in painful patterns. Honor your capacity to grow and change. Clarify how you want to engage life and others. Recognize your well-being as a worthy goal.

You’re looking for a therapist, good for you! This is the first step of many. If you landed here on my profile, I’m going to trust that you were meant to. Keep reading and reach out if what I say here resonates with you. I’m a therapist but also I’m a human! I’ve been through some (shit) that has brought me here… very much equipped to handle yours. Bring me your old stories and beliefs. I welcome all of them. I promise, you can’t scare me. I create a safe holding environment. That is KEY. I am collaborative and I trust my clients to know themselves in ways I never could. I am but a guide in your larger journey.

The process of finding a therapist can often be a daunting first step, and it can be difficult to know who to trust and who can help. A good fit with a therapist includes a feeling of safety and a belief that your therapist has the ability to help you. Clients who find themselves at home in my practice are people who experience chronic depression or anxiety, individuals with a history of family wounding, individuals with relationship or identity issues, couples with difficulty resolving arguments, teens in crisis, and those feeling stuck or in transition.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
