I apply psychodynamic, family systems, and cognitive behavioral therapies.
I believe that seeking professional help is a strength and not a weakness. I value individuals for who they are, and I appreciate their pain and struggle. I make every effort to understand my client's needs, and I make it a priority to meet with my clients at their starting point. Along the way, I do my best to provide my clients with safe and healthy environment.

ADULTS My approach is integrative - I incorporate multiple therapeutic frameworks to understand and to support my clients. I use client-centered, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness interventions while holding in mind the "systems" that you are a part of (your environment, relationships). I’m interested in how the past has shaped who you are. I want to help you use insight from your life experiences to guide you forward. I believe every person is the expert on their own experience and capable of tremendous healing and growth. I would love to talk to you about the possibility of working together to see if I would be a good fit.

Carter has received training from industry leaders including the Semel Institute at UCLA, The Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and the California School of Professional Psychology where he earned his doctorate degree.
As a psychologist, Dr. Carter sees his role with patients as being solution focused. The primary goal in working with Dr. Carter is efficient relief from the presenting symptoms. Dr. Carter's approach begins through application of neuroscience based techniques assisting in rapid emotional regulation and efficient symptom relief. Dr. Carter understands that while symptom relief can be success enough for many patients, going beyond symptom relief and healing the causes of the symptoms can lead to long lasting change. Dr. Carter teaches patients skills to empower them in creating sustainable mental and emotional health.

I am trained in the these evidence-based practices: EMDR Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Seeking Safety, Aggression Replacement, and Strengthening Families.
Every person has inherent creativity and a capacity to thrive. My role is to help connect you to your existing strengths and to help you try out new tools. When words are not enough, we can turn to more creative processes. Art therapy and EMDR are modalities that engage the body and mind, what we feel and think. Both modalities help us not only think differently, but also feel something new and healing.

Each session is strength based tailored to what your needs are, combining Gestalt, CBT, Existential, Eclectic, Family Systems and Narrative/Post Modern therapies.
We are at a time where compassion towards self is more important than ever. Life is overwhelming and complicated. Maybe you "have it all" but feel like something is missing or you are having issues communicating your needs. Many struggle with the idea of having symptoms of depression and anxiety internalizing the symptoms with being "crazy". I am here to remove the labels and have individuals be more aware of the symptoms you experience (fear, poor sleep and appetite, nervousness, sadness, negative thoughts, etc.) and treat them with compassion, reframing and safe coping skills to better improve your life.

I believe in a holistic, person centered, strength-based approach while also utilizing evidence-based practices such as Intuitive Eating, ERP, DBT, CBT, & ACT.
Courage is a powerful virtue. In fact, Maya Angelou claimed that courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. I am passionate about supporting those finding the courage to do the hard things, whilst also healing the inner child. Lifelong growth, healing one's relationship with food and self, and providing a safe and comfortable space to explore are things I strive for in my sessions. I am direct, yet warm, empathy driven, collaborative, and curious - I truly just want to see you thrive and prosper through the therapeutic experience!

My primary method of treatment is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP).
Many of my clients struggle with distressing thoughts and feelings. My clients often make mental and physical efforts to relieve the distress but are generally unable to find lasting relief. Many suffer in silence as thoughts become too difficult to talk about. My clients want to live life without so much fear, anxiety, guilt, and time-consuming behaviors.

Although I tailor my interventions depending on the individual, the interventions I have seen to be effective are play therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, & Motivational Interviewing.
Family conflicts and understanding your child or teen can be frustrating, but with the right help and support, understanding your child or teen can be a wonderful experience. I've been working with children and adolescents for over 15 years. I love working with children and adolescents, because I struggled during those years, myself, and would have benefited from someone helping me to understand the various emotional struggles a child or teen goes through. I specialize in working with individuals living with Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, ADD/ ADHD, depression, anxiety, and school and home behavioral problems.

I care about what’s important to you and will work collaboratively with you to create a treatment plan that combines your strengths and preferences with evidence-based practices including DBT, CBT, MBSR and ACT.
I love working with individuals of all ages who are open-minded, willing and interested in cultivating a meaningful life. I recognize how challenging it can be to remain willing and curious when the world and life as we've known it continues to rapidly change. One of my primary goals is to support clients to feel more moments of contentment and safety so that they are able to imagine the possibilities in front of and ahead of them. It IS possible to feel better and suffer less; and for life to look and feel different than it does right now.

My approach is humanistic and affirmative, integrating psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapies into treatment.
I believe that, at the unconscious level, each of us has a deep understanding of what our unique purpose is (i.e. a true sense of Self). However, through conditioning, life circumstances, cultural/societal expectations, and many other variables, there has grown a great disconnect between the way we are and who we truly want to be. In a safe, supportive and collaborative environment, I will help you navigate through this process of deeper self-understanding and reconnection in order to live a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life.

I help people find relief from distressing thoughts, better tolerate uncomfortable emotions, and change unhelpful or unwanted behaviors. If you feel trapped in your own mind or controlled by your emotions or habits, I’m here to support you. I specialize in treating general anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders (panic, health anxiety, PTSD), perfectionism, and body-focused repetitive behaviors (hair-pulling, skin-picking). While these are my specialities, I also treat many other issues including life transitions, trauma, eating problems, depression, and low self-esteem.

I use CBT, psychodynamic, relational, existential, and humanistic psychology approaches.
Life is complicated, and often very difficult. My goal is to help you deal with that. Relationships are so important to us, yet they’re the hardest thing we do. Sometimes the people that love us most, hurt us most.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
