I have worked with individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, insomnia, substance use, trauma histories, and ACES.
I am passionate about supporting individuals in their pursuit of finding understanding, connection, and self-compassion in their life experiences. I have committed myself to diversifying my education and approach to counseling through webinars, books, research, and conferences. I believe moments of our greatest struggle can also hold the most potential for growth and self-discovery. By giving ourselves a supportive space to explore the places that feel painful or stuck, we open ourselves to a wealth of information about our deepest desires, strengths, and wisdom. This makes it possible to live with greater self-compassion.

It's an effective, non-invasive, and drug-free way to dramatically reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, or trauma, problems with sleep or mental performance, and a wide variety of other problems people bring to therapy.
I help folks dealing with stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic health problems, and relationship issues of all kinds. My clients tend to be creative, philosophical, or intellectual people, and often (like myself) were raised in more than one culture. While what brings people to therapy is usually a stressful event or persistent problem, beyond just helping to relieve their suffering in the short term, my hope is that they discover through our work a lasting satisfaction that comes from taking the time to review their lives carefully and understand themselves more deeply.

Look at birds: they make great sky circles of their freedom. How do they learn to do that? They fall, and in falling, they are given wings. -Rumi ...In the course of being human, we all face losses and traumas of different degrees and in the process, find ourselves abandoning parts of ourselves in order to survive emotionally and interpersonally. Therapy is about reclaiming those parts and finding our way home to who we truly are.

I believe that our purpose here is to learn and grow. Challenges arise merely to help us break through our self-inflicted limitations. When we stop learning, we get stuck. When we're stuck, we stop growing. When we stop growing, we suffer. Unfortunately, most of us are living in this paradigm and aren't aware there is another option. I am passionate about helping my clients breakthrough into a much more fulfilling one, in which true inner freedom lives.

Psychotherapy can dramatically change your life. It can help you find hope out of hopelessness and meaning out of suffering. Sometimes we just need a helping hand. For over 40 years, I've been helping clients move from self-doubt, fear and judgment to a place of healing and self-acceptance. I have a special interest in working with individuals with chronic illness; individuals suffering from grief and loss; and the issues of aging.

I bring a positive approach to my work with people and believe therapy needs to be practical and strength-focused. Your strengths are key to creating the changes you want. If you are in crisis or struggling, you may not be able to readily identify your strengths right now. Even if you know your strengths it can be hard to see your way clear.

Fulfillment from relationships and the transformation of heartbreak, grief, trauma, depression, anxiety, and isolation are all possible. Sometimes we need outside support to help us identify our strengths and guide us down a path that leads to healing. With sensitivity and compassion, I integrate the most effective approaches that help my clients heal from the past and realize peace and happiness in their lives. I welcome individuals and couples of any gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and spiritual beliefs. I have worked extensively with clients who have experienced altered states of consciousness and those who use cannabis as medicine.

I enjoy working with individuals interested and committed to discovering their own inherent capacity to live a more embodied, present, and expressive life. I am passionate about helping those who are struggling with a major life transition or have experienced trauma/loss regain a sense of well-being and ease in their life and personal relationships. My approach to healing is fundamentally relational and holistic, drawing heavily on mindfulness-based, somatic, and creative expression techniques. I interweave neurophysiological, transpersonal, and attachment based frameworks that allow for both solution-focused and depth work.

I provide a safe, caring place to help you develop more satisfying ways of being in relationship with your partner, teen, yourself or your life. I believe we all have the capacity to be healthy and whole. Often, our upbringing or harmful experiences leave us with habits that no longer serve our growth and well-being. I bring a warm, compassionate presence to help you locate and heal the sources of suffering. I have worked with adults, couples, parents and teens over 40 years, assisting people to become more able to honor their heart's desires.

We are the therapy office for people who don't like therapy. Our belief is that therapy doesn't have to be the uncomfortable, somewhat formal experience that most people expect. We have 2 therapy dogs, Jackson and Larry to greet you when you come in the door. Larry is Jackson's understudy and is still quite ..well ... enthusiastic in greeting clients (as long as you're not the mailman). For privacy, we have no on Mendocino Ave, but once you get inside you'll know that you're in the right place. We talk to you like one human to another to help you sort out what's going on in your world and how we can help.

The bumper sticker on my car says DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU THINK. This statement sums up one of the most important wishes that I have for my clients and supports the work that we will do together. It is my opinion that our beliefs about ourselves and the world are our most powerful tools for change (for good or ill) that we have. At your own pace, we will explore the ways that your beliefs affect your thoughts and feelings, and work toward your goals, both great and small.

Are you yearning to be your authentic self but feel held back by anxiety, hopelessness, or unhelpful old beliefs? Do you notice unhealthy relationship patterns you want to change? In my practice I use a method of holistic psychotherapy called Soul Lightening Acupressure which incorporates energy work and is gentle, effective, and efficient. As energy that has been lodged in your body from trauma or stress flows freely again, old patterns of thoughts and behaviors can clear, insights arise, and rapid and lasting healing can occur. After a session you will usually feel calm, centered, grounded, and lighter with new sense of clarity.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
