I believe that our past experiences have dictated the way we react as a child, a teen, and an adult, a family or as couple with our current situation. Having a better understanding about why we do these things can create a lasting change on our perspective of life. Viewing your emotional pain as who you are continues to increase any and all symptoms. Guilt and shame start to set in and the struggle to get through life becomes unmanageable. Perhaps it's addiction, anxiety, bad relationships, or another mental health diagnosis. Perhaps you lost what you once believed you were living for.

You feel like a fraud as a professional, looking like you have it together but really it feels like it’s all falling apart. You’re a rockstar at everything you teach others, a high achiever, successful in your field. But, if others were to see what was really happening behind closed doors, they would see your struggle to put your own words into action. You give to others, draining yourself until you have nothing left to give. Self-care is a great theory if you could only find the time. You know there’s another way but you’re not quite sure how to get there on your own. You know therapy would help but it’s difficult to make it fit.

Are you in a romantic relationship that feels stagnant or unstable, or are you single because you struggle to find a healthy connection? You're not alone. Many of us face relational issues that prevent us from living an authentic and fulfilling life. We all desire healthy relationships, especially with romantic partners, but often struggle to create or maintain them due to unaddressed attachment issues from childhood. Without healing these attachment wounds, we may find ourselves repeating similar unhealthy patterns.

Does it feel like you’ve lost yourself in taking care of everyone else’s needs while your needs have taken a back seat? When you have codependent tendencies, you give people your time and energy, but feel depleted and burnt out. You put on your happy face and expend a lot of energy trying to make the people around you feel comfortable. But they don’t know how uncomfortable you feel on the inside. They don’t know that tension makes you anxious, or that you only really see your value as a person unless someone else does. You can change your codependent patterns and begin trusting yourself, taking care of yourself, and loving yourself.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
