The bumper sticker on my car says DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU THINK. This statement sums up one of the most important wishes that I have for my clients and supports the work that we will do together. It is my opinion that our beliefs about ourselves and the world are our most powerful tools for change (for good or ill) that we have. At your own pace, we will explore the ways that your beliefs affect your thoughts and feelings, and work toward your goals, both great and small.

My approach is client-centered, warm and engaged. I am direct but not directive - I work off of what you'd like to bring into therapy. I support individuals and couples to increase awareness, improve communication skills, and strengthen relationship capacities. I enjoy supporting couples who want healthy relationships, but may not know where to start, and I believe you deserve a therapist that will both listen and offer meaningful feedback. I see us as co-explorers in this work and know that a good relationship between client and therapist is key to the self-growth process.

Much of philosophy today contends that modern life is damaged life. Theodor Adorno tells us that this life is wrong and cannot be lived rightly, while Walter Benjamin observes that, in terms of our structures of feeling and knowing the world, “we have become impoverished”. Adorno and Max Horkheimer suggest that magic died long ago. Wrong life, poverty of experience, and the death of magic: how then can we live? This question animates my thought as psychotherapist and educator. Over two decades of clinical practice have taught me that damaged life can be beautiful life, capable of the most radical kind of joy.

I believe some of our greatest challenges can reveal themselves to be opportunities for growth and change. Within ourselves we all carry innate wisdom and the ability to heal. As a clinician it is my goal to support you in reconnecting with your Authentic Self and rediscover the answers already within you, which may help ease your pain and suffering. When burdened by depression, anxiety, trauma, anger, or substance abuse, a person's ability to connect to their true self becomes blocked. My focus is to create a safe an nurturing environment to guide you back to your Authentic Self.

We are all learning to become human; no easy task. As anxiety has become the new normal, it can be challenging to live in a human body and experience all the intensity; sometimes we need some extra support.  Somatic therapy works with befriending your body in its wholeness (mind, body, spirit). I support you in tracking ALIVENESS & empower in your full expression.  Along the way, I teach skills that strengthen your capacity to work with difficult emotions, the inner critic, & habitual impulses while staying connected to the present moment.

We all come with baggage. It makes us who we are and yet it can be so heavy. My idea of therapy's purpose is to help clients lighten their load. Everybody wants to make healthier choices, to find joy in life. How that is done is individual and to be discovered. I have interest in and respect for the differences in people's experience. I also have faith in each person's ability to find a path to wholeness. If you have experienced trauma, suffer from anxiety, depression, or other disturbances we can find the way to access your own inner healing power.

Look at birds: they make great sky circles of their freedom. How do they learn to do that? They fall, and in falling, they are given wings. -Rumi ...In the course of being human, we all face losses and traumas of different degrees and in the process, find ourselves abandoning parts of ourselves in order to survive emotionally and interpersonally. Therapy is about reclaiming those parts and finding our way home to who we truly are.

I have been in the mental health field for over 45 years. During that time, there is very little I haven't been exposed to. I teach in the Counseling Department at Sonoma State University which keeps me current on the latest in the psychotherapy world. I have supervised Trainees and Associates as their Clinical Supervisor. Supervising other Clinicians helps me become the best Therapist I can be. Despite all my years of experience, I remain a lifelong student because to be an excellent therapist you need to stay humble and curious.

I imagine you are here because you are experiencing some kind of trouble, or unrest in your life or relationships. Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed by work, by parenting, or feeling haunted by a history that caused you deep pain? Many of us, no matter how many close connections we have, can be living our lives feeling very much unseen, and alone. I wholeheartedly believe that though we may feel lost or under-resourced in the moment, we already have everything we need inside of ourselves to be living a life of deep fulfillment, joy and an experience of wholeness in our lives.

As a trauma-informed therapist, I know that symptoms such as anxiety, depression, addiction and phobias are often expressions of unresolved grief and trauma. I support my clients to look at themselves and their relationships with honesty and love in order to create more freedom and connection in their lives. I believe that by bringing compassion, awareness, and just enough humor, we can engage our inner wisdom to shift patterns that have become stuck in our bodies and consciousness. I have specific training in serving LGBTQ+ communities, and am a trans-affirming therapist.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
