Do you find yourself feeling things really deeply or “overthinking” what everything means? Do you find yourself wondering about how your past experiences have shaped you and search for patterns in your life, trying to get to the root of your struggles. Or perhaps, life just doesn’t feel the way you imagined it would, or it feels like something is missing. You want to change but nothing seems to work or it doesn't last very long. There is another way. You may have been trying to do this all on your own. Maybe that is how you have been doing it your whole life. But you don’t have to. Let’s get to the root of your struggles together.

Good therapy experiences are based on an engaged and profoundly honest conversation that is collaborative, imaginative, thoughtful, and touched with a little grace. We open ourselves to the transforming power of our intuition when we feel truly heard, understood, and encouraged to risk being different. I believe this offers us the opportunity to stretch ourselves and live lives which are more free, creative, and emotionally generous.

Do you like working with me? Research shows that successful therapy depends on a positive relationship between therapist and client. I structure our work together so you will know within a few sessions if we are a good fit. My goal is to help individual adults, teenagers, and parents of teenagers understand enough about themselves so they can make healthy and sustained changes. I have helped clients save their own lives, manage anger, quit drugs and alcohol, improve self-esteem, build and/or rebuild relationships, improve work/academics, reduce anxiety/depression, and manage chronic illness.

I work with youth that have big personalities! They are complex, intense, passionate, independent, curious and very loving. They are also very smart, charismatic, and creative. They are all or nothing! One minute they are laughing, the next they are screaming. These children experience reduced filtering and advanced processing of information which causes them to have a hypervigilant stress response system. This affects learning, motivation, memory, the pursuit of pleasure, and self-regulation. This neurobiological quality is behind their intensity and originality. However, the right environment is key for their healthy functioning!

Welcome to my practice. I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

I provide remote psychoanalytic psychotherapy to adults.
“Out beyond the ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I will meet you there” (Rumi). I believe that the field where we meet in therapy is an in between zone, nonjudgmental and freeing, a step away from day to day life, where we can, together, come to new understandings and realizations, which can bring ease and change into your life.

While some individuals enter therapy with acute distress and specific problems that need to be addressed; others have a more vague feeling of discontent. In either case, the self-exploration of analytic work is meant to expand the way one thinks and feels. Learning to think creatively is one way to describe the goal of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. WIth guidance, an individual learns to hold the tension of multiple perspectives/emotions resulting in a flexibility of thinking that involves both analytic and imaginative parts of the mind. This "full thinking" can be applied to personal life issues, relationships and creative pursuits.

In my practice I blend an Existential, Psychoanalytic, and Humanistic perspective, adjusting my style to your needs.
You’ve always had a sense that something crucial is missing, like a song stuck on a note that never resolves. Sometimes you feel disconnected from your authentic self, unable to put words to feelings, lost in a fog of uncertainty. At other times it feels like you’re too much for others and don’t know how to let it out without feeling like a burden. This existential dread has been a constant companion, but you’re sure there’s more to life and that some piece of the puzzle is missing. You long to remove this familiar barrier from impacting your ability to relax, to focus, to show up more as yourself in relationships.

I offer insight oriented psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and use a strengths based perspective with clients.
Are you struggling in your relationships with others, or with how you view yourself? Do you have problems at work, or are you grappling with a loss? Many times we may feel unhappy, or bland but are not clear about the causes and what we can do. Personal growth is a lifelong process, and at times, choosing to embark in a psychotherapeutic relationship can help. We all have the capacity to better understand ourselves and improve our lives. In our work together, you would begin to understand the relationship you have with yourself and how you navigate other relationships.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
