Welcome! I recently completed my PhD in Psychology, Public Policy, and Law, meaning I have a more in-depth understanding of the intersection between the mental health and criminal justice systems - this does not make me a clinical psychologist. I have also been recently certified as a Certified Personality Disorder Provider (C-PD). My primary therapeutic modality is Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which has been empirically proven to help individuals struggling with self-harm, suicidal ideation, intense mood fluctuations, unstable relationships, poor emotion regulation capabilities, and frequent impulsive & risk-taking behaviors.

I work with individuals and couples who are feeling challenged with their relationships. Whether it’s your intimate relationship or with a family member, friend, or coworker, you are discovering that relationships are hard. Do any of these sound familiar? It’s hard to communicate your wants and needs, you get stuck in the same arguments over and over. You feel like you're taking on more than you share, and not getting appreciated for it. You’re finding it challenging to talk about sex and don’t know how to communicate your desires. You want to move forward after infidelity but the memories of what happened hold you back.

I am specialized in the treatment of older persons. A major issue in aging is the Life Review, and working with persons involved in a Life Review is a primary focus of treatment with me. Erik Erikson has identified the need to resolve the crisis between having an awareness of having lived a meaningful life versus the sense of despair that comes with the feeling that one's life has been meaningless.

For many of us, especially when we've tried before, it can feel impossible to even hope that change or healing may be possible. We feel blocked by moods, situations, patterns that we can't seem to change. On the other hand, many of us long to live a life in which we are wholly our self, to live from spaciousness and authenticity. If you're here, there's a part of you still holding hope. My approach in therapy is to address the parts of you that are hurting, to help them heal using trauma-informed modalities, then to help you to expand into whatever felt sense you are missing- calm, confidence, connectedness, clarity, ease.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
