In my relationship therapy work with couples, the focus is teaching couples deep listening skills in an attempt to help partners feel truly "seen" and "known".
I have been in the field of psychology since 1985. I am licensed as Marriage Family Therapist (1989) and Clinical Psychologist (1992).What guides my work is the belief that everyone, no matter their behavior, is doing the very best they can in that moment. Most often, aberrant behavior is the result of beliefs learned in childhood that are brought forward into adulthood which are no longer appropriate or functional.

I have specialized training and experience in couples therapy. If you are stuck in a painfully destructive relationship pattern, I can help you. I have worked with couples for over 35 years. EFT, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, is by far the most effective way to work with relationship problems. EFT is one of the only empirically validated couples therapy approaches, and has been shown to out-perform all other modalities in follow-up studies, tracking couples after therapy has ended. EFT has dramatically increased my ability to help couples transform painful relationship patterns into deeply fulfilling and enduring bonds.

In my work with couples, the areas of upset often are a map, pointing us to possibilities of potential growth. Your difficulties can become a catalyst for increased intimacy. It's easy for any couple to get off track in efforts to communicate - slipping into blaming or power struggles, rather than your true communications, which can bring you closer and into deeper intimacy and trust. My job is to work together with you to help you develop skills that help reclaim happiness - communication skills, skills in understanding yourself and your partner, skills for building and rebuilding the life you want .

******Currently not accepting new clients******* Are you frustrated with your relationship with your adolescent? Is your adolescent frustrated with you? Parenting is difficult as is being a developing child. You are not alone in these experiences. Family life is often difficult, especially when cell phones, friends, social media, and video games are competing for your adolescent’s attention. The demands of school, sports, mood swings, and chores also contribute to this stress.

Willow Tree Counseling’s therapists are trained in sex addiction and betrayal partner trauma.
Sex addiction impacts the addict and their partner. Sex addicts may experience preoccupation with sexual thoughts, hide sexual behaviors or activity from others, have sought help for problematic sexual behaviors, feel controlled by their sexual desire, feel depressed after sexual behavior, or notice others have suffered due to their sexual behavior? Partners of sex addicts may experience shock, intense anger, fear, and/or pain about their partner’s sexual behaviors, experience unexpected drops in sexual interest, feel like they are on an emotional roller coaster, or notice that past trauma keeps coming back and impacting them.

I have an ability to develop trust and understanding regarding our human condition with the individuals and couples I work with.
Individuals desirous to discover the deeper self that resides within. Persons committed to growing beyond the history that stunts curiosity and a sense of purpose in life. People with enough life experience to know that life requires introspection, discomfort at times and build the capacity to appreciate personal and psychological accomplishment. Couples that want to build a better relationship by solving problems from the foundation of love that brought them together. Men who have reached mid-life and seek to live fully the next part of life . People who will invest the time and money it takes for positive change.

I see individuals and couples.
You deserve a welcoming space that allows you to feel encouraged, understood, valued, and capable of positive change. As a therapist, and fellow human, I know how stressful and confusing life can be. Painful past events can leave us defeated and disconnected. Major life transitions can be overwhelming. Depression & anxiety can rob us of vitality and mental peace. Great healing can happen through safe & genuine connection to another. Sessions with me are peppered with moments of humor, gentle directness, and deep realness.

I work with individuals and couples in a collaborative, respectful manner that is accepting, approachable, warm and at times quite practical.
If you are feeling disconnected from yourself, your partner, or from others, that the weight of the past is becoming too heavy to carry on your own, or that your life is missing flavor or joy, I would like to work with you to support the change you seek.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
