I am bilingual (Spanish speaker) and can offer a culturally sensitive approach as applicable.
At some point in our lives, we are all challenged by a particular event or ongoing circumstance. Sometimes, the challenge becomes significant enough to impair the way you function. This impairment can show up in your life through anxiety, depression, self-destructive behavior, or other ways which diminish the quality of your life. Whether this has been ongoing for you, or has just begun, my goal is to work with you as a team to rediscover and enhance the coping skills you need to improve your quality of life.

My expertise allows me to provide culturally sensitive and evidence-based interventions, fostering a supportive environment where couples from diverse backgrounds.
Accepting new referrals! If you are struggling with relationship issues your in the right place. If you feel stuck and it seems there is no way to make things better, you may wonder if your relationship can change. I have good news. There is a path to change, but your relationship is stuck in a negative cycle. This negative cycle keeps you from being able to communicate, resolve conflict, and discuss problems. If your relationship is struggling, it is probably because you are caught in a negative cycle. I want to help you get out of the negative cycle.

You want to be listened to--really heard. You are sick and tired of conflict that creates lonely distance between you and your partner. You would like fewer angry moments and more times when you feel close and connected to your partner. You want the tools and skills to have RESPECTFUL conflict conversations that bring you closer. You are ready to grow, if only someone really understood you and had the expertise to coach both of you each step of the way. You may be feeling discouraged: "We've tried everything." So you want couples therapy rooted in solid research and a therapist who tailors it to your unique situation.

Is your relationship feeling hopeless, or stuck in conflict? You might find yourselves trapped in repeating patterns. You know communication should be improved somehow. Maybe you don’t spend enough time together. You could be avoiding each other because of past hurts you'd rather not bring up, or personal differences you've been struggling to address. You're likely not feeling as supported you could be. If any of this resonates with you, I'm a trained couples therapist here to help.

Too often, we feel we are surviving rather than thriving. Do you feel stuck in grief or loss, or that your anxiety is running the show? Are your relationships painful or not satisfying?Also-Parenting is hard! Maybe you're a new parent and it isn't what you expected, or even hoped for. Nobody tells you about the postpartum experience -that internal voice in your head that is constantly critiquing the new role of motherhood you're taking on, mourning the version of yourself you once were. Not to mention the pain that comes with a birth plan gone wrong. If you're mothering without your own mother, that also comes with real challenges.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
