Do you feel disappointed by your current relationships, feel consumed by stress or painful memories, or have difficulty navigating food and sleep? Trauma and chronic stress can leave us stuck, confused, isolated and in patterns that no longer serve us. Many of my patients have experienced the impacts of trauma. Therapy can be a path to find relief from the past, have a healthier relationship with your body and its needs, feel more confident in the future, and reduce many unwanted symptoms. I often see my patients find reduced stress levels, greater awareness, more meaningful relationships, and increased levels of functioning.

Hi! Thanks for considering me as your therapist. Whether you are struggling with a past trauma or current relationship, I have more than 30 years of helping people learn to live the best life possible. Areas of expertise: cult recovery (religious, other); ACA, PTSD, addictions, and narcissistic relationships, grief and loss. All of us hit speed bumps -- sometimes mountains -- that keep us from moving forward. Our beliefs about how life works can block happiness. We can't always change what's happening, but we can change our perception of it. I work exclusively online. See my web site: www.beaarmstrong.com

Deciding to see a psychotherapist takes courage. Good news, psychotherapy regularly delivers relief and positive change. My approach to treatment rests in the belief that people are doing the best that they know how, in the moment, and that we all desire to move to a healthier state when possible. As a professional psychologist, I specialize in helping people achieve their desire to move into a healthier state by reducing suffering and increasing wellbeing.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best, "Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope." Challenges in life are inevitable and at times, there are challenges that seem larger than our ability to manage them. Issues such as depression, anxiety; healing from previous trauma, and abuse are areas that can grip us and prevent us from living our best lives.

Are you tired of code/persona switching? Maybe there are some underlying behaviors & emotions that don't make sense & you want to learn more? Or maybe you can't seem to connect with someone who actually "gets it", which doesn't mean they're terrible people, because they're endearing when they try, but they just don't seem to fully understand. It's hard trying to navigate life & all it's complexities. As humans, we're multi-faceted, multi-dimensional beings which can be really overwhelming. There are parts that we love, other parts that we dislike, maybe even hate. This can cause to act in self-sabotaging ways, unintentionally.

I grew up witnessing the effects of social injustice, conflict, and violence on individuals and communities that simply strive for peace and connection. I have spent decades of my life walking alongside survivors whose basic rights were stripped and who sought to identify a path towards healing and belonging.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
