I've worked with youth and adults with severe mental illness and substance use issues in an intensive outpatient setting, and have spent the last four years providing services to incarcerated men and women.
I am here to support men and women ages 14 and up who are seeking to overcome anxiety, depression, and maladaptive habits. If you are tired of constantly feeling like you're sitting in the passenger's seat of your own life, let's work together to understand the "why" behind unhealthy or maladaptive habits, create awareness and understanding of who you are, and build confidence to get you back into the driver's seat. I believe in a holistic approach to therapy - physical, mental and spiritual. I believe you are the expert of your life; so let me sit in the passenger seat and assist with directions while you take the wheel!

I have worked with people who struggle with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and those who self-medicate with alcohol or other substances. I prefer working with individuals over the age of 18. I also have extensive experience working with people who struggle with depression, anxiety, mood swings, thought disturbances, substance use, and physical disabilities. Therapy is challenging, and yes, I will push my clients. But I am supportive and encouraging in my approach, and I will only push them because I believe in them, and that they have the capability of achieving their greatest good.

I view therapy as a very human process, as well as a very sacred one. While I am theoretically grounded in narrative and postmodern practices, I believe in using an integrated approach including Solution-Focused therapy, Positive Psychology, Motivational Interviewing, Existential-Humanistic Therapy, Family Systems, client-centered therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I believe that positive outcomes stem from working collaboratively with clients to build trusting relationships while attending to every person’s unique needs.

My clinical philosophy is one of pragmatism sprinkled with humor, based on treating each client as an individual with specific needs and empowering clients through education as well as introspection. I work collaboratively with each client to better understand and resolve challenges in their lives. By utilizing complementary therapy approaches and techniques along with a positive alliance with each client and colleague, I work to transform and rework significant emotional experiences and family issues that may be holding clients back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Are you having challenges in your relationships? Are you feeling unfulfilled at work or home? How we relate to others can have tremendous impact on our quality of life. Many times, working on ourselves from within translates to more fulfilling relationships with those around us.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
