I seek to provide a thoughtful and reflective setting where clients develop greater understanding of their problems and limitations through honest exploration of themselves, and to bolster strengths/foster growth. I provide a friendly and open atmosphere to invite sharing of whatever thought or feeling that comes up so that they can be explored, analyzed and ultimately changed if you want. I work in a collaborative way and do not necessarily see my role as an advice giver, but as a thoughtful companion in helping you find your own solutions and understanding. I use a flexible blend of clinical techniques and theories.

To others, it seems like you have it all. But underneath lives a different story. Despite your outward success, you feel haunted sometimes by feelings of failure, conflict, self-doubt. At certain moments, a gnawing sense overcomes you, telling you: Something is not right. You've made changes but somehow still end up in the same unsatisfying patterns, repeating the same unhelpful behaviors -- feeling more and more alone. You want to understand your patterns and your past so you can create a different future. You want to learn to feel differently about yourself and how you relate with others. You want to find a different way.

I have over ten years experience working with clients in their teens or twenties who have: attachment issues; ADHD, Anxiety, and Depression. They suffer relational trauma for a variety of reasons, such as: emotional abuse and neglect; physical or sexual abuse; and sexual assault. I help my clients resolve past trauma; heal attachment wounds; replace unhealthy habits with healthy ones; and to progress towards their life goals. This results in them having healthier and more satisfying relationships; a greater sense of connection and belonging; and higher functioning in every day life.

Did having a child increase the stress in your marriage? Do parenting decisions create conflict when you used to get along? Are your problem-solving talks increasing blame without creating agreements? Is the tension with your partner wearing you down? Most of us move from dating to marriage to parenthood and run into problems with our partners. The problems that we experience can hit us at our core, weakening trust, isolating us. With support and guidance, you and your partner can grow together, gaining knowledge, improving communication, healing wounds, increasing your trust in yourselves, and developing a stronger foundation.

Navigating life can be difficult. Perhaps you find yourself stuck in problematic relational patterns, struggling to find a different way. Maybe you criticize and put limitations on yourself. Perhaps you have endless empathy for everyone but yourself. Maybe you’ve turned to alcohol or substances to avoid the pain. Maybe you don’t feel much of anything at all. Perhaps you are simply in a rut and you don’t know how to get yourself out of it. The good news is, by simply looking for help you are on your way to regaining confidence, agency, and a fuller, more authentic sense of self. A self that CAN navigate the difficulties of life.

My interventions are rooted in providing psychoeducation and honoring client self-determination, helping clients to better understand their experiences. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) interventions to assist children, youth, and young adults in recognizing the interconnectedness between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, which enables them to develop and implement personalized coping strategies to reduce anxiety and depression. I have also received training in mindfulness-based interventions aimed at assisting clients in using breathwork and meditation to reduce their stress.

I work with my clients to deeply discover and access new resources and potentials of "self at best" both for growth and as ways beyond obstacles. I believe the quality of the relationship between the therapist and client is essential for change. I have over 17 years of spiritual practice which I incorporate using mindfulness, inquiry and dream work.

My name is Darrin Oliver and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Los Angeles, CA, and working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work primarily with adult individuals specializing in anxiety, stress, grief/bereavement, and adjustment disorders using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help my clients make progress toward feeling better and more capable. I've found that my style and approach are a good fit for people of color who may be dealing with challenges of life transitions, coping with stress, adjusting to change, or who may have difficulty with processing trauma (lived or vicarious).

My work focuses on those who are attempting to navigate through serious psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse or living in a household with someone who struggles with substance abuse or addiction. I help teens, stuck young adults, and stressed families navigate the perilous journey to find serenity and sanity in their daily lives. Throughout my decade and a half of experience, I have learned that effective treatment starts with dignity and authenticity. These factors lay the foundation for the most important aspects of successful therapy: safety, honesty, and courageous vulnerability.

"Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination...." In Wild Geese, Mary Oliver does not promise salvation, but points to the okay-ness of your being, to the importance of your inner world. How do you, in your imagination, relate to the world? You can find peace inside yourself. I believe therapy is about wholeness-it's not about rejecting who you already are, but about including all aspects of yourself. With compassion and honesty, let's explore the full you so that you may find your inner peace.

I think therapy is a collaborative process that is unique to each individual. My goal is to support each of my clients in the way that they need me to. Sometimes this means teaching tools and techniques, sometimes this means exploring painful memories. Having honest conversations is foundational to the work we do. Honest doesn't always mean serious. It can involve humor and jokes, as long as it's real and genuine. I believe I work well with those who are willing to identify small steps and move forward despite how uncomfortable it is, in order to find peace.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
