I primarily work from Rogerian, client-centered, and psychodynamic orientations.
Authentic communication and connection nourishes our essence. Being in tune with our deeper self helps us stay centered, feeling sure and confident of who we are. At times our head may spin from anxiety-provoking events or situations. We can learn to cope and self-regulate by getting in touch with our self in different ways. Nourishing our essence gives us a solid sense of self-worth, helping us feel safe and secure in the universe allowing us to take ownership of our journey through life, whether dealing with addiction, depression, anxiety, or relationships we can learn to live in the solution.

I see individuals, couples and children and treat a wide range of issues such as relational problems, self-sabotage, pregnancy and post-partum difficulties, and parenting challenges. I use a psychodynamic perspective, working with my clients in a collaborative and insightful process. Problems are understood within a context of past interpersonal experiences which often help provide understanding to the client's current situation. I am also well prepared to help clients of faith effectively integrate spiritual convictions and concerns with psychological understandings and emotional health.

If you are struggling with mental health, relational issues, stress, and struggles with substance use, I may be able to help. I have over 20 years of experience. Although I have the knowledge, experience, and skills to pass along, I do not consider myself an expert but rather a sounding board, an interpreter, and support to help clients develop their own insight and trajectory forward. I use a holistic approach incorporating psychodynamic theory, cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, developmental psychology, and addiction treatment.

My integrative approach to counseling is rooted in psychodynamic, attachment, and emotion focused therapy.
I am currently accepting new clients. I am a compassionate therapist who is passionate about supporting others on their path towards growth and healing. I work with people to help them understand how their past has shaped their present, break free of unhealthy patterns, and heal from emotional wounds. I believe positive change and healing occur in the context of safe relationships. When we feel seen, understood, and relationally connected, we can overcome life’s most challenging situations.

I come from a psychodynamic approach with an emphasis in Depth Psychology.
Hello, my name is Shannon Squillante, LMFT 98938. I have a humanistic approach to therapy, working to understand the individual and how they have learned to interact with others in ways that no longer serve them- and work to undo those ways to provide the individual with more freedom and choice in their actions, which I believe can lead to healing. Understanding where we come from and the impact that it has had on us is vital to growing those parts that were stunted and creating reparative moments through relationships to work towards acceptance.

I am passionate about helping families manage difficult life transitions. Maybe the path to pregnancy hasn't been as easy as you thought it would be, or taking care of a newborn feels overwhelming. It could be that your school age child is facing stress or a change in behavior. Perhaps you are facing a new medical diagnosis, or are a caregiver to someone with a chronic illness. Or, possibly, you need to process your feelings of grief and loss.

When life gets difficult, talk often isn't enough. With creative strategies, compassionate support, and cutting-edge tools, you can get past your past, feel more connected, and experience confidence, clarity, and joy. I am fascinated by the latest evidence on how we can bring about lasting change. I listen intently & share my thoughts. We'll get to the heart of the matter and connect the dots. Sure, we will talk. But we will do much more. Many find that talking to a therapist may produce some results, but that gains are often temporary. I specialize in approaches specifically geared toward deep and long-lasting change.

Sometimes in life we metaphorically fall in a hole. The tried and true methods that may have worked in the past to reduce the discomfort of our situation may no longer be effective. In fact, those specific ways we have used to keep us safe from unwanted feelings may now be causing problems for us and interfering in our relationships. Using a compassionate, collaborative and emotion focused approach, I assist my clients in recognizing and welcoming their feelings, owning their wholeness and humanity and regaining trust in themselves and their journey.

My mission, in this profession, is to assist people in living more satisfying, authentic lives as individuals and in their relationships. The objective of therapy is to aid people in coming to terms with the issues that are inhibiting their growth, whether those be external influences or self-sabotaging. The goal, in individual therapy, is self-acceptance, more personal power, and simply, a more positive, happy life with a diminishment of anxiety and an increase in self-definition.

Here is what I know: Life is beautiful and life is messy. Life is joyful and life is painful. There is not a linear trajectory. Life may be going along swimmingly, and then seemingly out of nowhere something can change in an instant and send one on a completely different course. Wouldn’t it be nice to avoid these unpleasant truths? Unfortunately, the ways we attempt to avoid suffering usually create more of the very problems we were trying to ignore.

You once believed there was more to life. On the brink of losing hope in the life you deserve, you've resigned to just survive, barely. The old worn out saying recycles like garbage, “If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again,” only to be met with more failure. Disgust darkens your mood and sours your relationships. At work, at home, life has become a battle ground, Covid culture, politics, technology and media divides those you meet and love. Your name could replace Murphy’s Law, whatever can go wrong….endless trials and tribulations. So tired of it all. You wonder if there isn't a better way to live and love.

Real Self care is from the inside out. We live in a fast paced, digital culture that can be wonderful, but often makes it difficult to focus. Daily demands wear us down, and attempts to maximize productivity often pave over the feelings that would help us discover what matters most. Psychotherapy can be like the best of collaborations, to open options not previously imagined or that you did not think possible. It is a way of showing up for yourself and alligning with what really matters to you.

Despite your hard work, does it seem like problems continue to pop up for you? You might consider your family disorganized or even chaotic. You have noticed a shift in your child or children and are concerned, it may be caused by divorce or a loss in the family, or other events that cause stress. You are worried about their socialization and they seem to just not be themselves. Friends, family and maybe even teachers are expressing their own concerns regarding your child. You are not sure if it's your parenting or what more you can provide your child. This is scary, overwhelming and it takes courage to admit it isn't working.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
