One of the few doctoral African American therapists in SF, I bring long experience, caring, and skill to many cultures.
My "ideal" patient is ready to make changes s/he has long wanted and feels able to explore the barriers to emotional well-being in partnership with an experienced therapist. Building a healthy relationship in therapy is not only essential to immediate goals, but is a skill that patients take away for use with on-going problem-solving.

Communities centered in my practice: Black women, WOC, QTPOC, educators, tech community and professionals.
The decision to embark on the path of healing and face oneself, is not an endeavor to be taken lightly, as it requires courage, vulnerability, and patience. With that said, intentionally delving into a healing process can be a powerful and liberating experience - an amazing journey, filled with new discoveries about oneself. In my practice I help my clients shed light on their unconscious process, gain more awareness about themselves, including what motivates them, better understand how they relate to others in their lives, as well as find healthier ways of connecting and coping.

I work with a diverse clientele and specialize in providing social justice oriented psychotherapy to Black people and other POC, as well as members of LGBTQIA+ communities. I provide culturally responsive therapy, which focuses on the strengths you already have. I tend to use a cognitive-behavioral theoretical approach (CBT), while also paying attention to your environment and access to social support. I work with you to build a safe space where you can share your experiences without the fear of being judged, and where you can focus on becoming clear about what you want, and how you want to go about making that happen.

As a Black, Queer, bicultural, first-generation clinician, I care deeply about working with others of intersecting and/or marginalized identities.
One of the bravest things we can do in life is to seek help when we need it most. It can be difficult to carry our struggles alone, and a true relief to have someone help us to work through them. No matter what is bringing you to therapy today, the key to change is an openness to the possibility of your own healing, evolution, and growth. From there lies the door that can lead to the discovery of your full potential.

My lived experience as a genderqueer, black, and Mexican person informs my practice lens and use queer and feminist theories in my clinical work.
Are you and your partner(s) looking for counseling? Whether due to stress outside the relationship, wanting to feel closer to each other, or repairing a rupture from cheating, I can support you through your relationship journey. As a systems-oriented therapist, I firmly believe in the transformative power of relationships, but that doesn’t mean they are easy to navigate alone. Every relationship orientation is welcome: monogamous or nonmonogamous. While my practice focuses on queer partners, I'm also happy to work with queer people of color for one-on-one therapy. I’m an ideal therapist for folks new to/scared about therapy.

As a queer Black Arab immigrant, I recognize the importance of how social identities can have a great impact on someone's mental health. Even navigating the mental health system can be exhausting and at times disappointing. In my practice, I aim to provide a safe space for people who often struggle to find one due to systemic and social injustices. I assist people in the healing of their trauma and processing difficult experiences as they navigate living in a society that is in itself in need of healing. I am passionate about my work and love being present with my clients through their journey of healing and self-discovery.

Life is hard. On my good days, I feel connected to everything around me. On my bad days, happiness feels so far away. I set high expectations for myself, but sometimes they’re impossible to meet. I try to build relationships where I can truly be myself, but sometimes vulnerability is too scary. I hope therapy can be a space to safely explore these topics and more. You may think that some parts of you – thoughts, behaviors, or traits – are good, and others are bad. I think they all exist for a reason, but some of those parts may no longer align with your goals. Let’s challenge your beliefs and figure out what works for you now.

"Look within. All you need, you have. Use it. Behave as best you know; do what you think you should. Don't be afraid of mistakes; you can always correct them; only intentions matter. The shape things take is not within your power; the motives of your actions are." (Nisargadata 1973, p.365)

Seeking out therapy is a very heroic action in and of itself, perhaps your first proactive step into redefining your sense of self, creating a new life story, and taking a leap into the direction of self-care. If you are reading this, you may be in a state of uncertainty, or perhaps connected more deeply than you would like to be to the effects of depression, anxiety, or your daily life situations. Maybe, you are wrestling in a relationship with someone you love; perhaps, finding the words to communicate who you are and how you feel may seem unattainable and challenging at best.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
