You are seeking a deeper, healthier, even spiritual connection to yourself and others; perhaps you have tried different modalities to alleviate your depression, anxiety, or trauma, and you are considering psychedelic-assisted therapy in a safe, legal, and relational context.

Hello! My name is Annu, and I am a therapist in San Francisco (and online). I work with immigrants and adult-children of immigrants....also known as Third Culture Kids (TCK) or First Generation Americans. I work with multi-cultural and multi-racial couples, many of whom are people of color. I work with successful, career-driven achievers. I belong to each of these demographics - my parents immigrated to the US in 1971, and I worked in the corporate world for nearly 2 decades, climbing the corporate ladder rapidly before pivoting my career by going back to school to study counseling psychology. I work virtually via Zoom or phone.

I specialize in guiding individuals through their journeys of healing and self-discovery with a focus on the mind-body-spirit connection. My work is rooted in the belief that true transformation involves more than just addressing thoughts and feelings; it requires an exploration of the whole self.

As a psychologist, my role is being your partner on your path to greater wellbeing. I believe the bedrock of this partnership is your sense of safety within it, and it is from this safe place that change begins to feel possible. I believe that the quality and strength of our partnership has a great impact on how effective our work is together, and our first step forward is developing a relationship in which you feel secure and empowered.

My approach is behavioral and goal oriented. I focus on identifying new coping strategies and changing behavioral patterns that damage relationships. I assist clients in identifying deeply held values and taking behavioral steps towards getting closer to these values. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral techniques to help clients who struggle with relationship problems, depression, anxiety, OCD, and mood disorders. I help clients identify particular core beliefs that act as barriers to values-based behavior and explore alternative coping behaviors to utilize when one's schemas are triggered in relationships. Particular methods I incorporate in treatment include mindfulness, cognitive defusion, exposure, and Nonviolent communication.

As a mixed-race cisgender woman, I have lived with both dominant and minority culture experiences.
Life can be complicated and confusing. Making room for joy, for satisfaction – for even a deep breath – can get pushed aside amid the demands of family, school, work, and the flood of world news. You may be struggling with newness, such as new parenthood or going away to college, or with the loss of a loved one or a long-term way of living. You may have experienced a traumatic event, or be concerned with emotional eating. Or maybe you just feel that something isn’t quite right, as an individual or as a couple, even though life looks fine on the surface.

We all have things that we are uniquely suited to do, innate talents that when developed fulfill our sense of purpose in life. Perhaps you had to bury that purpose long ago. No matter what you've been through or how old you are, transformation is possible. Therapy with me is about figuring out what you truly want to do and overcoming the internal and external obstacles to doing it.

I create a therapeutic space for adults who are overcoming challenging pasts to build fulfilling lives. Maybe you were raised in an invalidating environment, had stifled self-expression and creativity, felt pressured to conform to societal expectations, or had limited opportunities. These conditions can lead to immense anxiety, sadness, and loneliness. It’s also normal to struggle with low self-esteem and feeling out of place in the world. And perhaps these remnants from the past hold you back from leading your best life today, whether that’s choosing a childfree lifestyle or coming out as LGBTQ+.

I believe in the transformational power of play and creativity for children, especially in the context of a warm, confidential relationship with a caring therapist. I understand that behavioral change is both skill based and relational. I have over thirty years of experience working only with children and adolescents in individual therapy. Thus I bring to my work a lifetime of professional experience understanding the developmental and attachment needs of children, a background of work in childhood trauma, anxiety symptoms and the special considerations required in helping children and parents navigate divorce.

I'm curious about people: how our unique histories have shaped us, how we relate to each other & what motivates our behavior in relationships. I specialize in processing relationships with couples & individuals struggling with codependency, communication, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem & identity. We often get stuck in repetitive behavioral/thinking patterns that block us from living the lives we yearn for. We may feel misunderstood or disconnected in our relationships. We may avoid intimacy because we don’t want to get hurt again. We may have a harsh inner critic & lack self-love. Do you experience this in your life?

You feel bad about your body. You have to eat perfectly or the day is ruined. You cycle between being “good” (under-eating/ being rigid) and “bad” (overeating/ losing control) around food. You vow to be “good” going forward. The cycle is eating away at your self esteem. You double down on your efforts to control yourself, but you’re growing more obsessed and frustrated by the day. Even when you succeed, it never feels like enough. You never feel like enough. Anxiety is making it difficult to connect with your friends, feel confident dating, or relax when you’re alone. You feel stuck.

I have particular interest in working with young women who are dealing with issues around anxiety and depression.
I believe therapy can help you feel more connected to yourself and those around you. In my experience, the best predictor of success in therapy is the relationship built between the client and the therapist. I create an environment where you'll feel supported, understood and safe in our work together.

You may be a highly educated and successful person who struggles with perfectionism, work-life balance or impostor syndrome (doubting your accomplishments; fearing being seen as a fraud). You may be a person of color, a child of immigrants or someone who is geographically separated from your family and other support systems. I have had significant experience helping individuals like yourself, experiencing both personal and work-related stress. I work to understand your story, and together we develop a plan to address the goals that you have for improving your quality of life.

Perhaps the uncertainty in the world is making it hard to hold hope for the future. You may feel burdened by old fears and traumas and unsure of how to break old patterns. Maybe you're feeling frustrated that your successes have not reduced your experiences of self-doubt, discontent, imbalance or disconnectedness. Through our therapeutic journey together we deepen our understanding of these challenges, how they developed and how we can work towards creating a greater sense of freedom, balance, connection and joy while reducing feelings of anxiety and self-judgment.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
