You finally left the office after another long day. This should be when you can take a deep breath and relax, but it’s not. The day’s stress is still with you, and you have no way to shut it off. And in some ways, this is more comfortable for you. You’ve spent so long training yourself to ignore your own needs that it’s easier to stay focused on everyone and everything else. But lately, you’ve begun to wonder what it’s all for. You see other people enjoying full lives. Meanwhile, you’re stuck in this narrow existence. You love your career, but there must be more to life than this. Now is the time to make a change.

It's very important in therapy to know for sure that your therapist really "gets" you. At GTC, we’re LGBTQ therapists for LGBTQ people. I founded the Gay Therapy Center in 2015 because I believe in the healing power of LGBTQ people working with LGBTQ therapists. We've now grown to become the largest private LGBTQ therapy provider in the country with therapists in DC, NYC, SF, LA, and online. We personally match you to the therapist we think will be particularly good for you! You won’t have to deal with waiting lists, sifting through profiles, or matching by algorithms.

In addition to immediate help, people want deep and lasting change, and this is the overall focus of my approach. First, a vital part of therapeutic success is forming a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship. My approach centers on creating a warm, collaborative and interactive therapeutic setting in which painful or troubling feelings, thoughts, memories, and issues can be faced and worked through. Goals are tailored to each individual, and can be brief and focused, or longer-term and more depth-oriented. I specialize in life transitions, trauma, identity issues, and mood problems. I also work with couples.

Do other therapists seem judgmental? Don't understand? Won't listen to you? If you need to talk about anything and everything, clients tell me I have a strong capacity for compassion, empathy, and care. At the same time, I’m forthright and candid. I see you and hear you—a whole person (body, mind, spirit) living in an interactive and interconnected world. I believe you're the expert in you - even if you're not yet aware of it. My role is to help you find that, and bring my own holistic vision, experience, training, expertise, and tools to the table, so you can work to be the best possible version of you. I am a trauma specialist.

I respect the pain of men.  Men who cannot figure out what the culture, or their own families, want from them.  Men who numb themselves with porn or work or status, believing these things help them feel more when really they feel nothing.  Men who avoid their own responsibilities to others.  Men who break their promises to themselves.

Do you struggle with finding or maintaining inner peace in specific areas of your life or, in life in general? Do you experience unhappiness or dissatisfaction with your life? Therapy may help you identify the blocks in your life that keep you from living and experiencing life as you desire. Left unchecked and unexamined, negative dynamics rooted in our past and/or fears & anxiety about the future may progress with greater consequence and/or disillusionment about life. I strive to understand your experience(s) in order to form a genuine connection and to identify meaningful solutions that honor you and your highest life aspirations.

There’s been some comfort in keeping everything held together, in avoiding talking about what’s happened. But there’s a part of you that knows that you need to deal with it at some point. You’re tired of shallow relationships and sexual hangups. And while your life looks great on paper, you are baffled why you feel so unsatisfied. It’s infuriating that you have to deal with this, but you know you have to. You’re wondering what you can do to move past your past, stop sitting on the sidelines, and start living. But sometimes you question, “Where do I go to unpack all this stuff from my past?”.

Are you in a bad place, fearful of losing an important relationship, fearful of being alone, needing help to regain your stability? Have you gotten overloaded by stress, fly to anger easily, or feel directionless and misunderstood? Are you hard on yourself and others? Are you having a tough time in an important relationship? Does it seem your partner does not understand you, or that you’re at risk of losing the good times and ease of trust that used to be there?

There are many factors that can lead a person to therapy. Perhaps you’re experiencing a persistent feeling of fear, loneliness, or anxiety, but can’t quite put your finger on where it’s coming from. You may have experienced a recent change or loss of a loved one, relationship, or job that is profoundly impacting you. Or, it could be that the voice of your inner critic is so loud that they/she/he is all you hear.

Welcome! I’m Shallyn, a queer, non-binary somatic therapist. I work with adults, teens, and relationships. I believe that healing happens "at the speed of trust," in relationship, and beyond the binaries of good/bad, broken/healed. I believe that the healing container we make together will be a space where you can start where you are (as the world’s expert of your own lived and felt experience); where you can notice and honor what your body is already doing to heal and protect itself; and where you can exist beyond stifling binaries and norms in unfolding relationship to your body, yourself, your people, and your world.

If you are having a tough time in relationships, are feeling 'off', out-of-balance, or facing feelings of loss, grief, anxiety, depression, or confusion, I may be able to help you. Let's collaborate in a process where we explore, uncover, and understand your experience. Let's look with curiosity at what your patterns and feelings are trying to tell you. We will face the truth with compassion. I bring a calming, engaging, and dynamic presence to therapy as well as experience, strength, and hope. I offer a combination of insight, empathy, and tools that can support you to move through the raw, or tough parts of your psyche.

Moving closer to a balanced and whole state of mind is the main goal of talk therapy. In a trusting and collaborative environment, you are given the chance to remove obstacles on the way of reaching your full potential for personal growth and improved mental health. Also, through conversation with an objective and trained individual, you will be able to understand the complexities of your mind, making your unknown known. In addition to working with adults, one of my main focuses is individual and family psychotherapy with adolescents dealing with issues such as identity formation and relationship building.

Are you searching for more meaning, joy or ease in your life? Do you long for more fulfilling work and relationships? Do you wish you had more confidence to live your dreams? It takes courage to take the risk to reach out for help and begin the process of exploring yourself. Psychotherapy is a safe space in which to release old patterns and beliefs so that you can move toward the life you most deeply want. We'll collaborate so you can know yourself better. I work particularly well with folks who have had a difficult relationship with their mothers and the impacts of that relationship on all areas of your life.

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
