Deciding to go to therapy can be challenging. The idea of having to open up to a stranger can be scary but I hope I can ease some of those fears by providing a safe space. From a culturally sensitive lens, I work collaboratively with all my clients to build an authentic relationship. I believe that we get hurt in relationships but also heal in relationships. I help my client understand how their past relationships have impacted them and contribute to their suffering. My goal is to help clients build better relationships with themselves and others.

I would like to help you clarify your goals, identify obstacles to reaching those goals, and then work together collaboratively to determine the best method of navigating your life and relationships to achieve personal fulfillment. I believe that attitude and perception significantly impact how individuals deal with pain and conflict, and that exploring problematic areas from different perspectives in a safe, nonjudgmental environment can transform and heal.

It has been my privilege to create a safe space for men to freely express themselves without fear of judgment.
I know from my own experience, reaching out for help as a man can be challenging. Hiding behind the mask of “I’m ok” and burying emotions can seem like the right thing to do at first, but eventually this can become exhausting. This way of living can create a fast track to unhappiness. However, peeling back that mask, facing life's struggles, and finding your authentic self can be a challenge worth pursuing. Hi, my name is Matt, and I specialized in working with adult men through some of life's most difficult issues.

When my clients come to see me, they are looking to find a way out of the negative thoughts that plague them and cause them to derail their lives. Everyone deserves peace in their lives and to believe in themselves without being brought down. When they enter my office, they are totally accepted as who they are. The purpose of counseling will be to help them improve themselves and their lives in areas they are seeing deficits.

Nothing can erase the past; however, with detailed understanding of how men experience abuse, the proper support and guidance and, most importantly, the safe space to begin the emotional healing, life can get so much better.
One out of every six men in the United States has been sexually abused and millions more are sexually assaulted as adults. Unfortunately, most sexual trauma treatment programs are designed for women, making them a poor fit for male clients. I have spent my career offering a safe environment and treatment specifically designed for male survivors of sexual trauma. I help men throughout California confront their trauma, understand the impact it has on them and their relationships, build healthier coping strategies, and start to heal from the wounds inflicted by the abuse/assault.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
