And of course, there is always room for humor on any journey! I use a combination of evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral (or "talk") therapy, expressive arts, music and mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques to connect with you and help guide you toward feeling like the best version of yourself.

I believe that one of the most important factors for successful therapy is the "fit" between therapist and client. I have been told by some of my clients that they like my direct style, interactive manner, and the feeling of being heard and seen. They like my Russian proverbs and humor. In both individual and couples therapy, I strive to bring out the best, wisest, kindest, flexible, most functioning adult parts of my clients to the surface. Through therapy, my clients get insight, make better choices and enjoy feeling more in charge of their lives.

Life can be complicated and confusing. Making room for joy, for satisfaction – for even a deep breath – can get pushed aside amid the demands of family, school, work, and the flood of world news. You may be struggling with newness, such as new parenthood or going away to college, or with the loss of a loved one or a long-term way of living. You may have experienced a traumatic event, or be concerned with emotional eating. Or maybe you just feel that something isn’t quite right, as an individual or as a couple, even though life looks fine on the surface.

I help clients to know their strengths, how their cultures and families affect them, their needs and their purpose - their very selves. They may lack good ways to get their needs met. Or, they may not be asking the right questions. They may be looking for more calm, more joy and more control over their thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Successful therapy means getting to the root of deeply held internal conflicts, false beliefs and feelings about who we are. They are often adaptive, originating from trauma and attachment wounds. However, they can direct our behavior in looping ineffective patterns, restricting our tolerance for a full range of emotions. Parts work, somatic and trauma focused modalities and my warm, flexible, interactive approach augment our collaboration. You determine the pace of our work as I attune to your uniqueness and need for safety. When a problem solving approach is needed, I offer tools to ease anxiety and navigate through hardships.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
