Being an adopted person can be incredibly complex and emotional, and it's important to acknowledge the depth of these challenges that many adoptees face. There’s a profound need for understanding, compassion, and support for adoptees as they navigate their personal journey, which often includes layers of grief, confusion, and an ongoing search for identity. Other challenges an adoptee can face is preparing for, going through, or experiencing a reunion with their biological family. adoptees can have are grief, identity and sense of self, belonging, guilt, shame, anxiety, depression and low self-esteem.

I specialize in serving GIFTED PROFESSIONAL AND CREATIVE ADULTS AND COUPLES. Being gifted is a minority experience, which is hard to own or talk about due to cultural (mis)attributions of elitism and arrogance, so many gifted people have not explored this aspect of their identity and how this may be related to difficulties in their life. You may feel out of step with the world or misunderstood, and not know why, or that you have to hide aspects of yourself. Or have trouble making friends, be told you’re "too intense", feel socially awkward, not understand why others seem to respond negatively to your ideas, or feel deeply disappointed with the world’s imperfections. IN MY OFFICE, YOU CAN BE UNRESERVEDLY YOURSELF. Talking frankly about being gifted can improve your self-esteem and offer relief from self-doubt, loneliness, anxiety, or depression, as you develop strategies to meet the majority culture more effectively. Before becoming a psychologist, I worked for 25 years in startups, nonprofits, academia, and F500 companies. I hold a Stanford MBA and Berkeley MSEE, and have special training in assisting gifted clients. I've also published research on the creative process.

As a compassionate and non-judgmental listener, I create a supportive and collaborative environment where clients feel comfortable sharing about their most personal challenges. I strongly believe that the insights gained in therapy can lead not only to symptom relief but to an empowered, positive sense of self and a more fulfilling life. I consider the unique qualities and needs of each individual and integrate mindfulness and CBT when appropriate, but much of my work is deeper, exploring emotional patterns and beliefs developed in childhood.

Welcome. If you have found yourself here you are probably looking for relief. My passion and experience focuses around helping others find clarity and balance. We each have different histories, needs, patterns of thinking, and struggles. All of us develop strategies of protecting ourselves that have been useful in the past but have become outdated. It's important that we move toward ways that currently work; that help guide us toward the most peace and happiness possible. Guiding individuals toward getting to know, accept, and thrive in one's own self and in relationship is something I am dedicated to.

I engage with my clients deeply, using my years of experience, expertise and intuition, to allow them to experience life more fully. Many people cover over feelings of fear and sadness to protect themselves from hurt. I strive to create a safe environment where trust can be developed, and people can gradually rely less on their need to protect themselves through self-destructive patterns, and more on their healthy, life-enhancing strengths. I help my clients to feel more connected with themselves and to have richer, more meaningful relationships with the people in their lives.

When you are ready to embark on your healing path, I will meet you with compassion, fair witness, and the skilled guidance of 20 years as a psychotherapist. Together, we will follow the path of the present moment, journeying to your true Self. The blocks to our own potentials developed for good reason from damaging events in our lives. They have served as protections but have also kept us encaged. Our soul, our spirit, longs toward a fuller Self.

Families consult with me to get guidance on a large variety of issues-from behavioral challenges, childhood aggression, situational crisis such as illness, weening, separation anxiety, or sibling concerns. Some parents need help in learning how to talk to their children about particular topics, some are working hard not to bring the ghosts of their own childhood's into the relationship with their children. Many are trying to figure out what behavior is developmentally appropriate, what behavior needs particular attention and how to set effective limits for their children in a way that feels both strong and loving.

I have a passion for supporting clients through transformative periods of their lives. Some are seeking to heal from past traumas, move on from a relationship or career, or let go of old habits that are no longer serving them. Some are going through a profound, yet challenging, spiritual process. Though our work I will help you reinvent and step closer to your true self. I enjoy working with adults, teens and children. The adults I work with often have a sense they are on the verge of stepping into something greater and more meaningful in life.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
