I do individual and couples therapy dealing with: addictions; defensive communication; sexuality; aggression; parenting, and money. *I find that most couples during arguments or stressful times, communicate poorly--are reactive and quick to blame. I really value helping the individuals develop themselves and their skills as a way out of this cycle, and towards a loving relationship. *In individual therapy we may deal with loneliness, anxiety, addictive patterns/substances or depression. We work together to set personal goals and on staying accountable. I focus on their maladaptive thoughts/feelings that can interfere with them retaking charge of their life.

I specialize in analyzing relationships, establishing reconnections & processing emotions. I work to help you heal from past trauma and it's impact on your social relationships. I also deeply explore loss, anxiety or symptoms of depression. Together at your pace, we will get to the root of emotional distress through processing past moments in time that lead to personal negative outcomes. We will work together to build a stronger sense of self to promote wholeness and an increased sense of well-being. I will work to "unstick" you from unprocessed life encounters or loss where emotion was not felt, nurtured or resolved.

It is my belief that all individuals innately have the capability to enact the changes they would like to see in their lives. Yet too often in my work have outside forces taken a strong hold on the individuals locus of control. My role is to support my client with providing perspective and encouragement, in order to understand how to go about that enactment. Every person has the ability to rise to their challenges. At first it might not seem so because of whatever internal and/or external barriers they have encountered however I firmly believe each client is the hero of their own story and they will overcome their challenges.

Feeling anxious, heartbroken, or overwhelmed by the November 2024 presidential election results? If you’re experiencing grief, fear, or uncertainty about the future, you’re not alone. The emotional impact of significant societal changes can trigger feelings of anxiety, loss, and trauma. Do you feel numb, in shock, anger, rage, and maybe even overwhelmed by deep sadness and despair? I understand how these collective and personal experiences can leave you feeling stuck, isolated, and unsure of your next step. Many experience these intense emotions and my hope is to create space for supporting and processing these surreal feelings.

I enjoy working with adults, married and unmarried couples. I have over 20 years of experience in working with the following conditions: depression, anxiety, stress, traumas, relationship issues, addictions, anger management, and grief. My patients have indicated that they enjoy therapy sessions with me because is like talking to a friend that really takes the time to listen, clarify, validate, and propose different solutions and ways to change perspectives or narratives, all without feeling judged. While in session, they feel safe, relaxed, and accepted without feeling they are being " analyzed".

Through empathy, understanding and genuine compassion for your struggle, I will work with you as you fulfill that need for a better, happier, more meaningful life.

I have two decades of experience in the behavioral sciences as a clinician and educator. Over the years my approach to clients has evolved from psychotherapy to creative problem-solving. I have found that many clients struggle not necessarily with “mental disorders” but with ineffective mental strategies. The mind doesn’t come with a user’s manual. But you can learn to use your mind. The mind is the user-interface for your neurosomatic (brain-body) system, similar to the screen of an iPhone or computer. Although we have limitless potential, we need the proper apps (mental strategies) to utilize that potential.

(Zoom Video sessions) My ideal client: A creative, motivated, and intelligent professional with an obsession, usually drugs/alcohol and/or sex. A higher percentage of creative people struggle with addiction, because they just don't know when to quit! Creatives frequently have low self-esteem, often despite proven success. Using cognitive (CBT) techniques and psychodynamic methods (how events from the past affect the present) I use a pragmatic, individualized approach. I include solution-focused and music/art therapy to help the client gain insight and put the insight to work to achieve realistic goals.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
