Whether we are experiencing new or old emotions, feelings, or having thoughts that are getting in the way of life, it can be difficult for us to feel at peace and be present with our loved ones or self. Our relationships at work, with family, friends may be at risk because of this. This can make it challenging for us to be the best version of ourselves. Even if we don't feel completely ready to "do the work," starting to work towards it is a great start. Learning about our behaviors and what we can do to manage and process our emotions in healthier ways may be foreign to some, but great for someone who'd like to make changes.

Life feels like a roller-coaster. You wake up each morning feeling stuck and unsure. There is no clear path to feeling better. Past experiences keep showing up when you least expect them, and your emotions get the better of you. It's lonely dealing with these feelings on your own, but you don't know where to turn. Hiding behind your mask is no longer possible. You've thought about asking for help but keep putting it off. Asking for help is on your mind and you are ready to take those first steps. The thought of confronting your past is scary, but you know that these old patterns are no longer serving you, and it's time for a change.

As a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, I enjoy working with individuals, couples and children that are struggling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, addiction and codependency. I work from a family systems approach to help facilitate healthy communication and to help identify the toxic patterns that are causing the unwanted symptoms. I also use Cognitive Behavioral techniques to help individuals learn how their thoughts, emotions and behaviors are linked and then how to make changes in order to help them reach their goals.

How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
